For those who found 2004's Aliens vs. Predator too lightweight in the gore-and-guns department, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem offers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which predates the story to all of the Alien features), Requiem sends a crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious Alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press).

Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout, which is wise, since the dialogue and characters are threadbare at best; that should matter little to teenage male viewers, who are inarguably the film's key audience. Fans of the Alien franchise, however, may find the offhanded nod to the series' mythology given during the finale its sole saving grace. --Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

This review is for the Blu Ray version, I have no idea how the regular DVD looks, but the main problem with this disc was not the film, but the picture. Most of the film takes place at night, but working out what was going on was very difficult as the black levels were so deep you could only just see what was going on. Tried it on three different players/ three different size LCD tv's, and the result was always the same. Apparently this problem has been noticed by quite a few people, check out IMDB discussion board for more info. Ironically, the trailer included on the disc is better lit, and you can clearly see what is going on, but the main feature is so dark it spoils the enjoyment of the film.

Wish I read these reviews before I bought - this expensive blueray is only the theatrical version - why not the extreme? Just received the disc today and it's going straight back to Amazon, I'll get the normal dvd release and get the player to do the upscaling.

When it comes to the Alien vs Predator films I have come to realise that if you're a hardcore Sci-Fi fan or a hardcore AVP fan then you will not like this movie.

The Story: The predator ship is crashed back into Earth after the Predalien hybrid kills all the other predators on board. The ship crashes in the middle of a forest next to a small town which is unaware that it is to become the victim of a war between different Alien species. After the crash a predator elder sets off from the predator homeworld to do a clean-up mission and to destroy any Aliens that may be born before it arrives.
When the elder arrives he discovers that he has more to worry about than just the birth of a few Alien creatures, he has to deal with a whole new species.

My Review: Going into this film I expected to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the first. The plot was lacking somewhat when it came to character development as it seemed to just be a film building up the the massacring of most of the characters in the most gory way possible. There was a great deal of different characters in this film which didn't seem like it was giving us a main human character.
The gore is definitely something that the Strause brothers wanted to focus on in this film as it seemed to be neglected in the first AVP. This had a very interesting premise when compared to the first film, the first AVP was based in an underground isolated temple whereas this film was based in an American town which lead to a lot of chaos. The urban setting was something I have wanted to see the Aliens in and is something I have wanted to see the Predator in again since Concrete Jungle.
As explained previously this had a number of characters but what seemed to be a lack of a main human character. I felt this pulled a lot away from the movie as it didn't give us someone to root for as opposed to the first film when we had Sanaa Lathan.
The Strause brothers set out to make a completely different film when compared to the first and that's something they truly achieved. It's a fun popcorn movie that the casual film fan would enjoy emensely.

Get it, you won't be disappointed.
