Well worth it, 17 Mar 2008
I bought disc 1 and disc 2 from Amazon at the same time - and at the time they were both the same price. Even as I write this (on the day of release) I see that Amazon has brought the price down on both, and also made disc 2 a bit cheaper... That's a good thing since BOTH tracks on disc 2 appear here on disc 1 in exactly the same form (same edit, same length etc).
This disc, disc 1, has 6 different remixes of "Something Good" plus the video. That makes it far better value than disc 2 - if you've heard the updated version of Something Good on the radio and want to get hold of the single, then this is the CD to go for. This disc has the following tracks:
Radio Edit;
Vanshe Tech Mix;
High Contrast Remix;
Ian Carey Remix;
Prok & Fitch Remix;
eSquire Remix;
Video.
I love the updated remix of this tune (the Radio Edit). I still really like the original - and this updated version adds some fresh energy that blows away the cobwebs. It's great, fun dance tune and well worth a listen.
The Vanshe Tech Mix is outstanding :) The Radio Edit is great - but the Vanshe Tech Mix is basically the "full length" or "club mix" version. If you like the Radio Edit, you really need to hear the Vanshe Tech Mix. The price of this CD is pretty much justified for this mix alone!
On first listen I wasn't overly keen on the High Contrast Remix, but after a couple of listens it grew on me. It's a much harder and faster version - a kind of cross between old-skool happy hardcore and Pendulum-esque drum 'n bass. I like Pendulum, so there was something about this mix that won me over.
I'm not all that keen on the Ian Carey Remix. It has a very "electro" feel to it that doesn't really work for me. The different parts of the remix don't really seem to fit together all that well in my humble opinion.
The Prok & Fitch Remix, on the other hand, is excellent! It's proper hard house - definitely with a bit of trance thrown in - and with a couple more samples from the original (1990's) version of Something Good that are not used in the 2008 reworked version. The Prok & Fitch Remix is, to my ear, a "serious" tune for a hard dance night.
I don't have much love for the eSquire Remix. I find it a bit uninspiring and kind of samey. It doesn't have the buzz or electricity of the Radio Edit but has more of a repetitive (dull) house-type feel. I'm sure it would work well in your average cheesy nightclub, but I find it pretty forgettable.
All in all though (for me at least) there are 3 or 4 great tracks on this single - plus the video. At less than £3.00, you surely can't go wrong. The title track, by itself, really is a great update to a great original tune.

Buy disc 1 - it's better value..., 17 Mar 2008
I've nothing against the music. In fact I really like the reworked version of "Something Good". I loved the original (which has aged pretty well, I think) but the updated version adds a bit of extra life that really works well.
The reason for the low star rating, though, is that disc 2 contains 2 tracks - both of which can be found on disc 1. At the writing both disc 1 and disc 2 are the same price - it makes no sense (to me) to buy this disc when you can spend the same money but also get a bunch of other remixes and a video on disc 1.
Anyway. This disc contains the Radio Edit (excellent) and the High Contrast Remix. As mentioned above, I am really liking the Radio Edit - but I was a bit unsure of the High Contrast Remix at first. It starts off sounding like a happy hardcore version which kind of put me off - then it kicks in a bit, and begins to sound a bit like Pendulum, I think. A lot harder and faster than the Radio Edit, the High Contrast Remix is a fun and bouncy drum and bass tune.
Once again: the Radio Edit (at approx 2:45) and the High Contrast Remix (at approx 8:40) are also available on disc 1 (with exactly the same timing). But disc 1 contains 4 additional remixes plus the video (the video is excellent, by the way :) Unless you really can't get hold of disc 1 or unless maybe the price has done something crazy by the time you read this - then get disc 1. Disc 1 will get 5 stars from me! Disc 2 only gets 3...
