Synopsis
Jake Paltrow directs his sister Gwyneth in this take on the midlife crisis. Gary (Martin Freeman) was once riding high as the member of a successful pop band. Now, seven years later, the band is no more and he pays the bills by composing mediocre music for commercials. To further add to his unhappiness, his relationship with his girlfriend, Dora (Paltrow), appears to be on its last legs. The only thing Gary looks forward to anymore is sleeping--so that he might have a reoccurring dream about a beautiful mystery woman he calls Anna (Penelope Cruz). He even goes so far as to take dream workshops taught by a scruffy eccentric named Mel (Danny Devito), in the hopes of prolonging his experiences in his subconscious. He soon becomes obsessed with escaping into his dreamworld, and his real life begins to fall apart. Depressed and confused, he finally has a revelatory dream wherein he realizes he needs to make a major change and return to reality. He plots a grand romantic gesture to get his life back on track, but the plan backfires with rather shocking and tragic results.

Martin Freeman gives an endearing performance as the befuddled Gary, and Gwyneth Paltrow is splendidly obnoxious as the nagging, frowning Dora. Viewers should take note, while THE GOOD NIGHT is billed as a romantic comedy, it's definitely not standard fare. It certainly has its share of laughs and feel good moments, but it also has some pretty dark undertones that one doesn't usually find in the rom-com genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Big stars - small film, 14 Mar 2008
By James D. Keaton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a really sweet, thoughtful little film about a guy who wants what he can't have. Martin Freeman is Gary playing an ex-musician who now writes advertising jingles, in a loveless relationship of convenience with Dora played by Gwyneth Paltrow, friends with his ex-bandmate played by Simon Pegg who he now works with but who has a slightly better career. And at night he dreams that he has the perfect relationship with a beautiful girl played by Penelope Cruz.
This is a well observed, funny film about relationships and the pressures that we put on our lives. But, do not be fooled by the big name cast; this is a small, quiet, gentle, almost art-house movie. Those expecting a broad comedy will be sorely disappointed.
Good performances from Paltrow and Freeman and a nice comic turn from the increasingly popular Simon Pegg, make this a lovely little film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great film that actually makes you think, 29 Aug 2008
By G. Crystal (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Don't be put off by the two negative reviews on this film, obviously written by people who don't actually like films that make you think about life. This is a great little film about someone who rather than face the problems in his life would rather chase the girl of his dreams in his dreams. Lucid dreaming and Penelope Cruz brings to mind Vanilla Sky but Freeman's character knows he is dreaming and wakes up to disasterous consequences. If you have ever been in a "grass is greener" situation you would do well to watch this film. Funny and thought provoking can be hard to pull off but this film more than manages it. Great cast, great story, great film. Negative reviewers open your eyes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely poor outing from actors who should know better, 31 May 2008
Shame on you Jake Paltrow.

Shame, shame, shame.

The worst film I have ever seen. That is no exaggeration and I have seen some god awful films in my time. The only thing worse than an unfunny joke is an obvious unfunny joke, and this film has some crackers. Whether it's Simon Pegg taking the piss out of the English doorman, Danny DeVito having an array of different jobs or Martin Freeman's "hilarious" indifference to life. That Gwyneth Paltrow, Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman and Danny DeVito agreed to do this film is shocking, as the writing is quite clearly as poor as the directing. There is minimal character development besides Freeman's indifferent, arrogant nature, Pegg's filandering and DeVito's "Zany-ness" and the film jumps so haphazardly between conversations and scenes that you lose interest just as soon as the film begins. When we watched this film (again no lie or exaggeration) I counted 3 minutes and 29 seconds when we lost all interest. I wonder whether the cast were duped into doing this piece by the fact that Jake Paltrow (you'll be surprised to learn) is Gwyneth's brother. If so, shame also on Gwyneth Paltrow for allowing her brother to dent not only her career, but Pegg, Freeman and DeVito's as well, not to mention humiliating her brother by allowing him to relase such a poor, badly written and badly directed piece. You should all know better.

I gave this one star as that is the lowest you can give but personally, I would give it none if I had the choice.
