5.0 out of 5 stars Addicted to this album, 19 April 2008
When Angels and Serpents Dance juxtaposes light and dark, heavy and soft. This is an ecclectic and diverse album, with tracks that will please fans from across the spectrum of rock and metal. Lyrically this is P.O.D.'s darkest album, songs such as the reggae track I'll Be Ready speak of spiritual struggle, whilst accoustic track Tell Me Why? and Rise Against speak of socio-political struggle. Yet remarkably hope prevails throughout the lyrical themes. Musically, the return of Marcos Curiel is prevalent, tracks It Can't Rain Everyday and Roman Empire exhibiting his Spanish/Santana-esque flare! Curiel's prog-rock influences are also discernable in the new album, especially on track Condescending. There are several artist collaborations, which add to the diversity of the album. Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies, Paige Hamilton of Helmet and the daughters of Bob Marley make appearances to enrich the band's already rich creativity. People who bought and enjoyed previous P.O.D. albums will enjoy WA&SD, for example It Can't Rain Everyday is reminiscent of Youth of the Nation. Yet WA&SD does not just hark back to the 'glory days' of P.O.D.'s past successes but strives forward in its musical, vocal and lyrical progression. This is a sophisticated and matured P.O.D. and an album that cannot be easily pigeonholed and does not follow current trends. An excellent album from a recently re-united band.

3.0 out of 5 stars POD go Emo?, 19 April 2008
By Stuart parry "stueytheround" (cornwall, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been a fan of POD since I first heard "The Messenjah" and eventually the "satellite" record from which it came.

WA & SD arrived in my letterbox this morning, all the way from the USA. It is a long way from that multi-platinum album.

POD of old were certain of what they believed, strong and resolute, they dared the world to hear their message of hope and joy.

Here we are, several albums down the line and there is a questioning and deeply personal feel to their latest offering. The in-your-face hiphop vocals on heavy guitars are all but gone. Almost every lyric is sung (and sung well) with vocals tinged with a world-weary sadness.

My headline says POD go Emo. It's a compliment! I'm an old school metaller at heart but I can tell that this record will have huge crossover appeal. In particular "This ain't no ordinary love song" is as contemplative and self-examining as any Emo song you could care to mention. "It can't rain every day" explores similar themes to the classic "Youth of the Nation" but from a much more grown up perspective. In fact, "It can't rain" and "Roman Empire" have a real Santana or early Fleetwood Mac guitar style; perhaps evidence that the boys have been listening to some classic albums between records.

"God forbid" is a classic POD rant: loud and raucous and reminding us that the POD who rock the joint have not gone away.

All in all, this is POD with some of the rough edges knocked off. Easier to have on in the background perhaps, but emotionally harder to listen to. Only three stars though because although I like it, Die Hard POD fans (Warriors) may feel a little let down by the lack of overt Gospel content and the low proportion of hard rockin numbers to bounce to.

4.0 out of 5 stars great raprock thoughful powerful return!, 29 Jun 2009
here is the latest album by the strong rap rock nu-metal. It is even more varied than ever, with many various styles mixed up- rock, metal, reggae, folk. It is different, powerful, thought provoking, deep, challenging and proud. Here is a unique strong rock album listen to in these tough times.
