CD Description

Cloudland Canyon's embracing of all things Krautrock continued unabated on their third full-length, LIE IN LIGHT. The album's opener--with the near self-parodying title "Krautwerk"--fuses the driving groove of Neu, the atmospherics of Cluster, the drum accents of Can, and the spacey effects and chant-like vocals of Hawkwind into one uber-Teutonic celebration. While the last cut, "Lie in Light", lies closer to Growing's dense drone, in between are surprising stabs at melodic structure new to the half-German, half American duo.

What Cloudland Canyon excel at is preparing the listener with swirling ambience filtered through an all-out psychedelic freak-out backdrop a la Acid Mothers Temple, at their more slower, calmer moments. Like their brethren, the equally magnificent Titan, it's cheekily borrowing the best of krautrock; Amon Duul II et al. What with the German song titles. What if the psychedelic music of Spaceman 3 were sped up, then slowed down?
