    Ive had the camera for about 3 days now and i have been playing with it since. my first impression is physically its not very striking when you see it. it doesn't have the wow factor. its very plain and simple not very stylish but very compact and light weight.

    now lets talk about the video and picture quality and performance, ill give it a thumbs up for having 60gb capacity, the video quality its just a standard definition but good enough to watch on a 42 inch TV without pixelating to much, the 35X zoom lens is good but a bit slow in zooming. shooting in low conditions is average, it has a built in automatic illuminating light but not very helpful, they could have consider a night vision like the sony sr36 hdd. its very user friendly you dont have be a nerd to operate this machine. the laser touch sensitive control panel on the view finder is pretty good as well.


    now for the not so good bits. the battery pack that comes with the kit is rediculous, fully charge it will only last 10mins of recording time. i mean come on 10 mins for a camcorder that can record for atleast 14 hours. hmmm? the grip of everio is not as ergonomic as the sony's, your hand should be dead straight 90 degrees unlike sony's elevated zoom controls. and last but not the least, the picture quality on camera mode is not as sharp and you can not take a snap shot whilst you are in video mode you have to switch back to camera mode to to take pictures.

    I would rate this camcorder 7 out of 10 for having a large 60gb storage, good quality videos and being very compact and light weight. its cheaper and have more storage than sony's equivalent (only 40gb). for its tag price this camcorder is good value for your money but but you are willing to give a little bit more go for sony.

    We have this camera for over 6 months now, and I'm glad I didn't read reviews up here before I bought it. The guy who is talking about .mod file problem is and xxxxx as stated by the other reviewer. .mod is a standard mpeg2 file with just different name, and it can be recognized on any recent video software. But if you would have some old software just change the extension name manually from .mod to .mpg.
    We use this camera every day. The other reviewer stated that battery last only 10 minutes, he is and xxxxx as well. The battery will last minimum 2.5 hours if you will keep playing with it or starting and stopping when recording some events. But if you just turn record it will work constantly for about 4.5 hours, and that in my opinion is very good.
    The cradle included with the camera is very handy it has the following outputs: usb, firewire/dv, av, s-vhs.
    I personally use only USB and firewire/dv. Usb to transfer files to my computer and firewire/dv to transfer files to my DVR recorder. The firewire/dv output on this camera works exactly the same way as normal DV cam so it takes as long to transfer the file as the clip is. USB is very fast it takes only few minutes to transfer few hours of video. The camera itself has av out, and usb as well.
    Camera is very small and handy, 35x optical zoom works very well giving nice and clear picture.
    I always use the highest picture quality setting, which allows 14 hours of recording time, which for me is plenty enough.
    Mac users will be happy that iMovie '08 works with the camera with no problems, but older iMovie HD hasn't got the drivers for it.
    There is many accessories available for this camcorder from spare batteries, to optical filters and wide angle lenses.
    This is not HD camcorder, but for SD camcorder I don't believe there is one more versatile on the market.
    I know for a fact that one of the UK's TV broadcasting teams has it as a worst case scenario back up.

    To summarize if you will buy one you will be using it, when you will buy one - buy Mac as well then you will spend more time playing with your movies the trying to work out how the software on PC works.

    if you want a camera to film your family on holiday in the carribean and then watch it back on the tv then i suggest you buy this.
    but if like me you want to flim and edit on the computer DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA! it is all fine untill you realise that it has recorded files in the .MOD format which is not friendly to editing systems. there are various long winded ways to convert the files but these WILL NOT WORK on windows movie make.

    just a warning.
