5.0 out of 5 stars the journey and arrival of a great composer, 4 Mar 2008
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara has been on quite a journey. His early works mixed influences of late romantic and nationalistic music with those of early modernists like Bartock and Shostakovitch. In the late 50's and 60's he took up serialism, before finding a new way forward in the early 70's with the shifting tonal patterns of Cantus Arcticus: combining taped birdsong and orchestra to evoke the wide landscapes of the north. Some things have remained as constants throughout his journey. He has always used traditional classical forms and been able to bend them towards his own ends without loosing hold of them. There has always been a lyricism at the heart of his works which has shone through every technique and structure he has embraced, making even his most modernist works approachable.

The first work here Apotheosis may be a twice reworked piece - derived from his opera Vincent via an existence as the final movement of his Sixth Symphony - but it stands well on it's own. It's heady brew of late romantisism and impressionism makes it sound to my English ears like one of Delius' shorter orchestral works.

The same rich sound world continues in Manhatten Trilogy - a recent work from 2004. Does it sound like Manhatten? What does Manhatten sound like? To me this sounds like music that could hang in the air between canyons of skyscrapers on warm summer evenings. The sense of Rautavaara reawakening the luxuriant sounds of the early 20th Century is ever present. I am reminded of the exotic nature music of Delius, the heady perfume of Symanowski, even the richness of Mahler. But this is not a retreat into the past. This composer has new elements to bring to the music. After a lifetime's journey in composition he finds himself among those composers who build on the past . His music is part of a still evolving continuity.

This is clearest in the Eighth Symphony `The Journey' from 1999. On one level this is as foursquare a symphony as can be found today. The traditional four movement structure is in place, but is being used creatively. Witness the second movement: a taut three minute Scherzo marked Feroce. This begins as a timpani driven madman's dance before morphing into a erratic merry-go-round of glissandoing strings which gets the listener's head spinning, before the welcome return to ground at the start of the third movement `Tranquillo'. The undulating subtleties of tone here are combined with the same deft handling of textures evident in the preceding movement.

The final movement signals arrival - apparently to a church - with tolling bell and climbing phrases on the strings. Or is this creation - those wide open northern spaces - as a glorious vision? Half way through that disorientating string glissando from the scherzo rears its head, saving the movement from one dimensional affirmative blandness: keeping it vital, searching and reaching forwards. Onwards and upwards it climbs, bells tolling, brass sounding, to it's summit.

Having been impressed with the way the Royal Scottish National Orchestra handled Rautavaara's Seventh Symphony a few years ago I must admit to some reservations when seeing that NAXOS has changed forces and that The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra was recording this disc. I need not have worried. They do a superb job. This music is different to that on the previous Naxos discs of the composer's work. It is richer, it is more traditionally romantic. The orchestra and the sound engineers have responded accordingly and this disc stands on it's own merits in its own right. A very fine offering indeed.
