Jazz Trumpeter Louis Smith recorded this album in 1961 for a label that went out of business only for Alfred Lion to buy up the catalogue and release it on Blue Note in 1963.

Perhaps it was the presence of Cannonball Adderley, working under the pseudonynm of Buckshot La Funke - due to being under exclusive contract elsewhere - that ensured its release - but it brought to the jazz public a remarkable trumpeter in Smith - never afraid to attack a song and the album with the valuable assistance of Tommy Flanagan and Art Taylor whistles along with great joy and drive.

After a couple more sessions as a sideman with Kenny Burrell, Smith retired to teaching before making a recording comeback in the late 1980's.

His moment in the sun however was brief but glorious - and well worth listening to - and Cannonnball is heard here at the top of his game.

Highly recommended.
