Dave Grohl may hold the official title of Nicest Man in Rock, but John 'Speedo' Reis is surely the coolest. Having made his name with the likes of Rocket From the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, Reis's credentials are beyond question and this is a more than worthy addition to an already impressive body of work. The Night Marchers - his latest incarnation - features members of the aforementioned Hot Snakes, and See You in Magic is a no-frills, stripped-down affair that puts The Guitar very much centre-stage. Reis is a fine player indeed; unpretentious and instinctual, he attacks his axe with an irresistible fervour that belies the careful craftsmanship of his song-writing, making tracks like 'In Dead Sleep (I Snore ZZZZ)' and 'Whose Lady R U?' immediately engaging hits-in-waiting. Elsewhere, there are references - both obvious and subtle - to the musical greats of the past (the Ramones and Elvis Costello, to name but two) but for the most part, this is sharp, catchy punk-rock, with a ragged and rumbustious edge that never sounds anything less than vital and fresh, and what it lacks in dimension it more than makes up for in ambition.
