5.0 out of 5 stars A neglected modern jazz classic from 1956., 30 May 2008
By Jazzrook (Purbrook , Hampshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Jutta Hipp was a talented German pianist who emigrated to New York in 1955 but met with some hostility from the local jazz scene and soon gave up playing to return to painting. However, while there, she managed to record this marvellous quintet album in 1956 with Zoot Sims(tenor sax), Jerry Lloyd(trumpet), Ahmed Abdul- Malik(bass) & Ed Thigpen(drums).
Jutta Hipp and the swinging, boppish music to be found on this BLUE NOTE RVG Remaster certainly deserves to be more widely known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Story, 8 April 2008
By Alan Cross (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jazz music has many tales to tell but none maybe as remarkable as that of Jutta Hipp.

She was born in Leipzig Germany in 1925 and fell in love with American Jazz during the 2nd World War through US radio broadcasts - she took up piano and fled to West Germany as the Russians advanced. Playing in clubs and bars in Frankfurt she was spotted by Leonard Feather who arranged for her to move to New York and got her an MU card with which she got a booking at Hickory House which started as a week and ended up as six months with two live Blue Note albums recorded.

This album was recorded in 1956 and sees her team up with Zoot Sims for a lively romp through standards at a breezy pace and stands alone as a wonderful album and well worth listening to.

The story however is perhaps more interesting, with a series of Blue Note albums in the bag and mixing with the jazz giants of the time she then fell out with Feather and by 1960 had abandoned the piano and making music altogether and started a new life as a seamstress, making dolls !

Jutta Hipp completely disappeared from the music scene

Over forty years later Blue Note managed to track her down to an apartment in Queens and presented her with a cheque for $40,000 of back royalties !

She died in 2003 and it was only when the obituaries were published that many of her close friends discovered that she had been a musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zoot Sims with an interesting lady at the piano, 11 Jun 2009
By Nikica Gilic (Zagreb, Croatia) - See all my reviews
Although Jutta Hipp (who unfortunately retired from jazz not long after this album was recorded) is billed as a star, it is actually Zoot Sims who gives the most impressive performance here...

He shines at jazz standards, like "Violets for your furs" (although he is great at originals as well) and Jutta gives a very nice; modern, restrained but at times also very subtle support. The trumpeter Jerry Lloyd is, in my opinion, the weakest link in this nice straight ahead band, recorded in 1958.
BTW; Jerry Lloyd-attributed original "Down Home" is actually a reworking of an well known standard "(Back Home Again in) Indiana"...

If your buying this, try to get the editions with bonus tracks ("These Foolish Things" and "'S Wonderful"); with them the album has 8 tracks.
