5.0 out of 5 stars
Simply jaw dropping, 24 Aug 2008
Right well I guess I should help you folks decide if this game is any good for you.
To start off this is possibly one of the best games in its genre mainly because its possibly the only 1 in its genre. Let me explain.
You start off as a level 1 Avatar of your choice say a Warrior, Necromancer, Mage, Elementalist. Such games like Diablo, Baulders Gate, Guild wars use this same style. You can customize your characters by equiping new armour, rings, helmets, waepons, shields, staffs, trousers etc. So its RPG heavy. Now ontop of your Avatar accepting quests, killing monsters and leveling up, you also build a base using Rune Stones. You choose from Humans, Elvs, Dwarfs, Orcs, Trolls and Night Elvs. Sounds familiar? Ok so the races may ring a few bells but as for the bases go you construct defences like arrow towers, mental towers, ice towers, you can build barracks to train your troops etc. So it has an RTS side but how do you get recourses? Is it like Tiberium from cnc? Is it mass or energy from supreme commander? Well infact its exactly like age of empires. Your villagers chop forrests for wood, hunt wild animals or buld farms for food, mine metals for weapons, some races even use more luxery things like lenya and aria or even moonsilver.
Does any of this sound familiar yet? Lets recap.
Diablo style character building of your avatar with leveling up, new magic and weapons.
Age of Empires style resource gathering for your economic growth.
Any major RTS game battle style with units fighting over epic landscapes.
Lord of the Rings units like elvs, dwarfs and not to mention a Balrog.
Your avatar recieves attribute points when you level up which you can spend on incresing your required abilities or you can choose to learn something new like white magic if your a warrior. Useful for healing buffs.
You can choose to play the whole game with only the Avatar though this is a challange for hardcore players and may become near impossible later on.
This pack includes both expansions which are both extremely long. In all your looking at around 200 hours of gameplay.
A decent game with suprising gameplay with its RPG+RTS mix. I loved it, spend months playing it.
The voice acting is terrible but the story is good. They dont usually talk unless its a quest or something important.
So why 5 stars?
1 star for game length (200+ hours)
1 star for music (several awards)
1 star for usable items, armour, spells (theres alot)
1 star for gameplay (fantastic options for upgrading units, avatar)
1 star for sheer experiance. Its something your not going to forget easily thats for sure.
So thats it. If it sounds too good to be true then try it for yourself and you'll be very suprised.

A Great Game.. High Fantasy at its Best, 17 Mar 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Ignore the reviews on this page because Im not sure why other reviewers are slating the game itself or Amazon based on CD Key issues, its a known issue.
Do what REAL PC gamers do, use your brain and check the JoWood/Spellforce forums and they'll sort it out for you, or if you dont have web access call their tech support, the numbers in the back of the manual.
Anyway, onto the game itself.. and what a game it is. Ive been playing Spellforce since its first release and I love it.
In this pack you get all 5 games.. Spellforce, Heart of Winter and Order of the Pheonix. Then Spellforce 2 and Dragon Storm. The original game and expansion plays more on the RTS side of things, where the story has you forming alliances with the elves, dwarves and more, which results in you getting to control their units giving you a wider range of conbat strategies, usually steamroller and rushing.
In Spellforce2 and Exp. Phenomic listened to the fans and ironed out alot of the problems that marred SF1. Better Interface and inventory system with better control and less bugs. This game is more RPG based, with your group of heroes travelling the land and continuing the story.
The graphics in both games are still gorgeous (If a little dated now) with nice particle effects, trees and grass blowing, wildlife everywhere in a fully alive interactive world with varied environments and landscapes. The sound is great as well, fitting fantasy music, which is actually listenable too and a very engaging and interesting story.
There are literally hundreds of items, weapons, armour, people, places to visit and things to see, huge monsters, flying dragons, battles and combat going on around you, magic and, yes, dark elves.
So why 4 stars, well the german to english voice acting is pretty awful, with some laugh out loud and quite humuorus dialogue. However, as another reviewer has said, it only happens in quests so its not too bad.
Also, the games come with a second story in the MP/skirmish mode called Freeplay, which allows you and friends to co-op or fight each oth in MP/Lan. Its really good fun, however, like me, youll probably end up just doing the story because its such a long big game.
There are dozens of hours of fantasy gameplay in this box, so if you find NWN2 combat D&D D20 system a bit daunting and slow.. this is for you and at £10, you cant refuse this one.
I really recommend it.

As Good as a Linear RPG Gets, 6 Mar 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
As the title suggests, this game is largely linear, so don't expect the open-ended experience of Morrowind (my absolute favourite). The graphics also just don't compare to the likes of Morrowind, the Witcher, and the like. The acting also leaves much to be desired.
But having said all that, Spell force still has a lot going for it. In many ways, it is similar to Neverwinter Nights: very symbolic graphics and bad acting but a world experience that is varied and comprehensive enough to be deeply immersive. If you're after the cutting edge of what super fast computers can offer you, then look elsewhere. But if you want immersive, addictive, and long term (dozens of hours) challenging entertainment, then the latest crass and smash just won't compare.
On the point of CD keys, I can't speak for others. However, in my experience, this package comes on two disks: Spellforce One and all expansions, and Spellforce Two and its expansion. Each has a separate CD key. Both are supplied on the CD box. Try to input the wong one and you will fail. Since there are only two CD keys to choose from, I had no difficulty whatsoever installing the game.
