5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh., 7 Feb 2008
By T. Callaby (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Beat Pyramid (Audio CD)
Beat Pyramid is an exciting collection of songs from the Southend four-piece These New Puritans. A group of young musicians, who are influenced by images, sounds and colours as much as music itself, have created a modern masterpiece. The album feels edgy and fresh with tracks such as 'Numerology aka Numbers' an illustration of the cryptic lyrics and ideas instilled in their music. Tracks such as 'Colours' are an exhibition of the powerful and innovative drumming style of George Barnett, whilst 'Navigate-Colours' demonstrates the band's ability to create epic, atmospheric songs. 'Elvis' is a powerful track, soon to be released as the band's first single on a major label: the droning bass-line and monotone vocals build to make a refreshingly new sound. The track 'MKK3' has echoes of Joy Division, though the album has few moments where These New Puritans begin to sound like anyone other than These New Puritans: this album is unique and must be heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Patchwork Masterpiece, 17 Jun 2008
This review is from: Beat Pyramid (Audio CD)
This is surely one of the most intruiging prospects that this year has offered us yet. Although ostensibly an indie album (and this is part of it's charm - it manages to be weird without being experimental and remains accessible), Beat Pyramid shifts paradoxically between esoteric electronica, indie dance-fodder, muffled field recordings, concept album stylings, angular hip-hop and eccentric post-punk.
Although at times it baffles, especially compared to the formulaic dance-indie that they're supposed to be making, it's all held together by recurring themes (cyclicality, numbers etc.), tape loops lapping as the record circles in on itself with `..ce I Will Say This Twice' and `I Will Say This Twi...', acting as a kind of narrative arc. For a bunch of teenagers (at the time of release), it's impressively eccentric and I must refute the cruel suggestion in an earlier review that this is too endebted to post-punk. That's just one of the many ideas thrown into the bulging pot.
Stand-out moments: Doppelganger, Swords Of Truth (Gang Gang Dance's looping beats meet Essex grime-punk delivery), Numbers A.K.A Numerology, MKK3 (think The Klaxons with an oedipal complex), and dance-floor indie belter 'Elvis.'

1.0 out of 5 stars What You (don't) Need, 14 May 2008
By Turner (Powis Square) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beat Pyramid (Audio CD)
Attendees of Southends oh so cool but now defunct Junk Club do their best Fall impression. During live shows the smile free singer likes to take a rest by laying on the floor and having a snooze. Silly little boy isn't he. Arrogant and dislikable in the flesh, below par Fall style post punk wannabes on record. Fashion without substance. Back to school for this sorry bunch.
