Product Description

Description
Originally recorded in 1957 and released in 1958, JAZZ GIANTS '58 is a canonical jam session album that helped cement West Coast cool jazz as one of the dominant styles of the era. Produced by Norman Granz, this session features Stan Getz on tenor as the nominal leader, backed with Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax (Mulligan also wrote the arrangements), Harry"Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums. A cool, understated blend of standards and originals, JAZZ GIANTS '58 is dominated by the four-part "Ballad," on which Mulligan, Edison, Brown, and Getz, in that order, all get to shine on a familiar old standard--including "Lush Life" and "It Never Entered My Mind." This remastered reissue is packaged in a miniature LP sleeve.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT MAINSTREAM Getz Edison Mulligan and co, 28 May 2008
By Nikica Gilic (Zagreb, Croatia) - See all my reviews
Yes, this is a beautiful and logical aglomeration of jazz giants: those who are the giants of modern jazz (Mulligan, Getz) have deep roots in the jazz tradition;
it is actually quite fascinating to hear Stan Getz on the opening number: he actually adds some of Lester Young style wailing to his cool tenor sound! That's quite compatible with the general mood of the song, with Harry "Sweets" Edison, in his prime, and really swinging rhythm section, consisting of Oscar Peterson's trio (with great Ray Brown having some opportunities to solo on this album and Herb Ellis doing some very effective comping), plus great Louis Bellson on the drums...

The basic principle of this album leans towards swing rather than modern jazz, but modern jazz is a key ingredient to this brilliant mainstream affair; it is a genuine pleasure to listen to Harry Edison working on Dizzy Gillespie's standard "Woody'n'you"...

All the musicians involved really shine (and both Mulligan and Getz have previously proven how well they work with older musicians - Hamp, the Prez, Roy Eldridge...) so this is a mainstream jazz affair to remember, a true festival of jazz giants, with Mulligan, in addition to sensitive solos, contributing some head on arrangements...

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Giants, 29 Mar 2009

Completely endorse the first review. Can't understand why this superb record was not in my collection many years ago. Because of my age I may be biased but to me the 1950s were the true golden age of jazz. Every man was in top form and the whole session swings like mad - try keeping you foot still when listening. Louis Bellson again shows that, at this time, he was a more satisfying drummer than Buddy Rich. If you doubt my word listen to the various Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong dates.
