4.0 out of 5 stars An eclectic mix, 3 April 2008
By Big Jim "Big Jim" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I believe this is the soundtrack to a film that Daniel Lanois made with U2 (not on the album), Brian Eno and others last year. It starts and is interspersed with various snatches of conversation between Lanois and Eno which breaks up the flow somewhat. The music itself is a strange hybrid of country/folk and electronica with the occasional ethereal jazz tinge, especially on the standout track, Lovechild. It is one of those albums that reward patient listening but would also not be out of place as background music at a dinner party. Make no mistake, this is grown up music and won't appeal to many under 20 years old, but for the rest of us we can appreciate a master craftsman at work with some excellent friends along for the ride.

3.0 out of 5 stars Muted class, 15 May 2008
From "Yellow Moon" to "Time Out Of Mind", Daniel Lanois as a producer has added swampy (as in New Orleans not hairy eco-protestor) class. Here on his recent solo effort we have bags of class, and strong songwriting. Sadly these songs are interpresed with words of towering pretention which is a shame.
2003's "Shine" was wonderful. And this could have been too without the chat.
"Where Will I Be" is shimmery and sweet and profound. "This Could Be The Last Time" is punchy Gospel.
The sweet pedal steel work on here is virtuoso. No doubt about that.
But hearing Brian Eno talk about a chest of drawers is not my cup of Red Label to be honest.

But Lanois' solo work is startlingly good in places and as a virtuoso producer, the sound on here is amazing.
4 without the chat. 3 with.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Dylan-sound, 24 Jun 2008
By Boels (Denmark) - See all my reviews
When you're a Bob Dylan fan, you know who Daniel Lanois is, and you probably know him as Danny. That's why I bought this album, without really knowing what to expect, but I had some of an idea about the sound. And I was right. I had Bob Dylan's "Time Out Of Mind" album in mind, and when you love that album, you'll for sure love this.

It's great. I don't know what else to say.
