Product Description

CD Description

Although RPWL is often lumped in with the early-2000s wave of European neo-psych acts like Dungen, their fourth studio outing, THE RPWL EXPERIENCE, only tangentially touches upon psych's more progressive side, focusing instead on hooky, tight rock songs. There is a time signature switch here and there, but the German quartet reveal a more plaintive side based on acoustic fare in 4/4, as heard on "Breath In, Breath Out", a near-egregiously flattering homage to Oasis' "Wonderwall". The album also includes a cover of Dylan's "Masters ofWar".

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good experience too!!, 27 Mar 2008

German band RPWL have come a long way since their beginnings as a Pink Floyd covers band. Their last album, "World Through My Eyes" was very favourably received and the same should be bestowed on this latest album. Though considered a prog rock group and even have a song about it here, they have a very contemporary rock sound, which wouldn't be out of place alongside the likes of Radiohead or Coldplay. Their prog rock leanings are in the dynamics of the musical interludes which permeates their lengthier tracks. Just listen to the excellent opener "Silenced" where the guitars and synths expertly weave in and out of the mix. It's the longer tracks, like "Where Can I Go? " and "Stranger" where RPWL sound most impressive, allowing the band room to expand. Saying that, beautiful songs like "Breathe In, Breath Out" show that they are very good at writing succinct and melodically strong material.

The Pink Floyd tag will probably never leave the band. This is dealt with in the catchy "This Is Not A Prog Song", where scathing reviews of the band are sang verbatim. But they have merged the Floydian tendencies nicely into their own style, never mind what the reviewers might say. Take the Bob Dylan cover "Masters Of War". I have never heard the original, but this is given the widescreen Floyd treatment to dramatic effect, but never sounds too obvious. Just listen to those fantastic guitar chords! In fact this track is a personal highlight.

I was surprisingly impressed by this album. The production too is superbly clear and dynamic. I enjoyed "World Through My Eyes" but found some of the eastern stylings detracted a bit from the songwriting. No such problems here. The band have produced a rock solid effort. There is enough variation throughout to keep both the prog fraternity and those seeking good modern rock more than happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 23 Mar 2008
This is the first RPWL album I have listened to. I am a big fan of Blind Ego having seen them tour with Sylvan last year. Kalle Wallner is the link, and I do not regret buying this album. I asked this question when I first got into Sylvan, "why are this band not massive ?", and I ask the same question of RPWL.

I hope some day you will tour in the UK as I cant make the gigs in Europe this year !!

Breathe in, breathe out and buy this CD now !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for 2 amazing songs, 16 Oct 2009
By Deven Gadula (san francisco, ca, united states) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am giving this album 5 stars only because it contains 2 amazing songs. I have to say honestly that at first I was a little bit disappointed by this album. I guess because I was awaiting it rather seriously while listening to their previous music quite a bit. When the Experience came out in 2008 I only listened to it a couple of times at first. I got really busy with work travel and with different music, I guess. I wanted to do my compilation of RPWL for about a year then ( a real habit of mine) and I knew from the first time I listened to the Experience that I would use Masters Of War, because to me that is one of the best covers ever done. (To me a song covered should be different from, and better than the original, otherwise why bother?) So I started listening to Experience over and over, (I used the 7 times method) and that was how I realized that the last song of this album Reach for the Sky is my most favorite song by RPWL. Look, I know that a lot of you will not be able to get through the lyrics... As soon as you hear 'my father' you will think of organized religion and be turned off. Try to get over it... It is a great song musically, structurally and spiritually. Perhaps I love this song so much because I love the wind and the rain (I love the sun even more) and because I windsurf, to find myself at the gym and church all at once. Listen to the last 3 minutes of this song really well... And to the last sentence.
