DVD Description

Rome's Ray Stevenson stars in the war-based horror film Outpost. As war ravages Eastern Europe, a a battle-hardened team of mercenaries undertake a dangerous mission into no-man's land at the behest of a mysterious businessman. Surrounded by hostile forces, they fight their way to a half-century-old underground Nazi bunker, a place where soldiers were experimented on to create a super-human army. The mutilated remains of those soldiers still exist along with a ghastly discovery--a survivor. Then suddenly, the men are attacked by primeval, horrific forces, protecting another secret--a nightmare they and the entire world will now have to face.

Synopsis

Ray Stevenson stars in OUTPOST, which follows a team of mercenaries as they battle their deadliest enemies yet in the form of Nazi remains and the survivor of a horrific army experiments. Set in dismal, war-ravaged Eastern Europe, the film explores the men's attempts to remain alive while digging up a mystery greater than they ever imagined.

3.0 out of 5 stars could have been so much more, 17 Aug 2009
By Susan Belcher "Su B" (St Helens, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A man called Hunt (Julian Wadham) approaches DC (Ray Stevenson) and hires him and 6 mercenaries to act as escorts and bodyguards as he looks for a long abandoned WW2 Nazi Military bunker (the outpost of the title). He is searching for a piece of machinery based on a theory by Einstein called the "unified field theory" - how the 4 forces of matter interact. Unfortunately, when they find the bunker they also find a room of bodies (not skeletons) and one survivor. Then things really start to go wrong, and the extent of the Nazi experiments starts to come to light.

For those that know about first person shooter games, the underlying story is (I am told) ripped from Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Return to Castle Wolfenstein: The Extended Edition.

This was a low budget movie, but is really not that bad for its lack of money. It has little or no CGI FX - which means that the film is dependant on the acting and scene setting rather than flashing effects. Much of the acting is ok and is good enough to carry off the tension required.

Unfortunately, this film misses the target because there are no `characters' among the mercenaries that you can take hold of and follow through to the end. This is due to the fact that they are flat (honestly they do lack any dimension at all) - this would appear to be a scripting problem. No thought had been given to producing characters that the watcher could get to know - when the mercenaries start to die I had a "so what" type of feeling rather than the usual "oh no" feeling I get. Character development could have been done throughout the first half of the film, but was completely ignored - such a shame as a little thought in that direction could have turned this from an ok film into a great film.

Overall, it misses the humour and camaraderie of the likes of Dog Soldiers [DVD] [2002].

At the end was still left questioning whether the bad guys were zombies or ghosts or what.

This film is, however, a good way to waste 1 hour 27 minutes on a Halloween night during a back-to-back horror fest with friends and family. It does build up some tension and can produce the odd jump every now and again. It is one of those films that will sit in the cupboard and come out every couple of years for the horror film fest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice little independent Nazi Zombie movie., 23 April 2008
By Max Berman (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews

If you're tired of gigantic hollywood horrors with their formulaic plots and calculated frights, you might want to try this little movie. Set in Eastern Europe, shot in Scotland, starring Ray Stevenson and costing a little over £1 million, you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Genuine tension is offset with sparing gore. Great gun battles and some Nazi voodoo technology thrown in for good measure make this micro-budget effort well worth watching. There are some great characters from all over the world dying in some really creative ways and some pretty nasty baddies lurking in a pretty scary environment.

Why not bypass the hollywood dross and see how a bunch of enthusiastic Scottish film-makers do things. Great fun stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmosphere similar to Death Ship (1980) with sprinklings of The Fog, 28 Sep 2008
By D. Wilson (Cornwall) - See all my reviews

Although it has a fairly slow start, this low budget horror-chiller gradually finds its feet and ends up delivering some spooky moments without ever taking itself too seriously.

Outpost certainly doesn't bring anything new to the world of cinema, but considering the lack of money they had to work with, there are some neat sequences and the cinematography is often slick and effective.

For anyone who, like the filmmakers, spent much of their teens renting low-budget horror movies on VHS, this should prove to be a decent addition to the genre. As long as you give it time to get going, it should turn out to be quite an enjoyable watch.
