5.0 out of 5 stars Distinctive Tuareg blues, 17 Jun 2008
I should imagine this band may find it irritating to be constantly be mentioned in the same breath as a certain better-known Tuareg act, but like a lot of people, i cottoned onto this band as a result of becoming a big Tinariwen fan and wanting to discover whether there were any acts playing the same type of music.

The main personnel behind Toumast were also forged in the civil wars of the '90s, and their music contains the same soulfulness born of such troubled times. There is the desert-blues electric guitar backed by more traditional instruments, the hypnotic rhythms, and bewitching vocals - again all as in Tinariwen's sound.

But there are also differences - the music has a particularly spontaneous feel, soulful but fairly upbeat. In fact there is something about the overall production sound, and the way that the band is happy to simply carrying on playing, stripping the sound down then building it up again, without even the vocals accompanying, that reminds me of a 70s funk outfit.

This album is full of life and warmth, and unerringly conjures up pictures of dancing around a desert campfire, making it a definite must-buy for anyone interested in having the sound of the desert in their home.

5.0 out of 5 stars softer side of tuareg blues, 1 Feb 2009

This review is from: Ishumar (Audio CD)
I loved this collection from track one right through to the end. Obviously very similar to Tinariwen so you know what you're getting- something that sounds like John Lee Hooker jamming with the Ayatollha Khomeini! But the sound is slightly softer here and the guitar playing slightly more western in style, less Hooker than Quicksilver Messenger Service. It's not really tuareg-lite, it's just that if you like that hard edged production sound of Tinariwen's "water is life" as opposed to the ramshackle warmth of their radio tisdas sessions you may find this a little pastel in comparison.I'm all for rough edges myself but I fell in love with this quite easily. It's still soul rebel music, born of pain and dispossession and full of passion. Highly recommended.
