Amongst the myriad recordings of this popular concerto, Walton's recording stands out as a sensitive, emotional but not sentimental rendering strictly based on a close reading of, and faithful attention to, the composer's markings. The powerful but mellow sound of the Guarneri cello easily holds its own agsinat the massive forces of the exquisitely timed and focused Philharmonia conducted by Alexander Briger in perfect accord with Walton's phrasing and concept. The coupling with Myaskovsky's concerto - unique amongst extant recordings - sublimely juxtaposes the emotional reactions of two composers to two World Wars a generation apart. In Walton we have a British Rostropovich in the making.
