5.0 out of 5 stars Imperially restleness, 13 Nov 2008

This is by far one of the best recordings of the Eighth. Klemperer's Bruckner has always a strong pace, a very deep breath, a harsh light that conveys its inner sense and polishes the excessive dramaticity of some simplistic, superficial readings like Karajan's. There is also in Klemperer's Bruckner a sense of organic mouvement, that unifies each moment (listen to his 4th, also in Medici Arts). It's a most-buy, even to compare with Furtwängler or Schuricht (EMI), two of the better interpretations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Klemperer before he got moribund, 20 May 2009

To clear the decks, so to speak, the performance on this disc is substantially of the 1955 Nowak edition of the 1890 version. Unlike the commercial (and now deleted) EMI recording there are no cuts in the Finale - in Klemperer's latter days he insisted that huge amounts of the last movement were redundant and just cut them, whilst playing the music at funereal pace. The performance here is an aircheck and is recorded in decent mono sound: indeed, it is the best of several possible ways of buying this performance as the other CD's are pirated.

The interpretation is remarkably flexible when judged by Klemperer's normally more monumental approach (but don't go looking for the speeding and slowing of Furtwangler or Jochum) but the grandeur that Klemperer was able to imbue certain pieces of music is there in plenty. This is a fascinating issue and well worth getting for the historical interest of catching Klemperer just before his interpretations became rather slow and uncharacteristic of his earlier work. This would not be the only recording of the 8th to have - I actually can't imagine having only ONE recording of this marvellous work! - but as a pendant to other recordings it is very worth while.

Notice, the Nowak 1955 edition is probably the most accurate in delivering Bruckner's final thoughts on the symphony's revision. The 1939 Haas Edition (as used by Karajan, Wand, Haitink, Gielen and Boulez) "turns the corners" in the Finale rather more smoothly by virtue of having 50 bars of the jettisoned 1887 version (available on Bruckner: Symphonies Nos. 8 (1887 Version) & 0 (Die Nullte) plus 8 bars of pastiche composed by Robert Haas - but it represents an "idealised" version of what Bruckner SHOULD have writter and is, hence, inauthentic in the strictest sense whilst at the same time also sounding very good indeed!
