At last we have the re-issue of Ellington's favourite of his extended works from the original tapes. Some years ago this was issued with the wrong takes of the first part and it was said that the master of the correct takes had been lost by Columbia.They have obviously now been found and the remastering is excellent.

Duke said in interview that this was the favourite of his extended works and one can see why. The band plays up a storm and the cast of singers, noteably Ossie Bailey and Margaret Tynes are superb.

This work has always been underated, perhaps because it was written as a TV production with dancing. (What a shame there is no video of this show). Never mind, it stands up remarkably well and Dukes whitty, sexy and humorous take on the history of Jazz had me smiling all the way through to the end. Highly recommended.
