Product Description

Description

One of the most innovative musical voices of the second generation of Detroit techno producers, Carl Craig is also a noted DJ and remixer. SESSIONS, a double-disc mix set, is a useful career recap, focusing on his own productions as well as remixes for a diverse cast of underground dance artists. From Craig's own minimal, funked-up alias' 69, Paperclip People, and Innerzone Orchestra, to his imaginative reworkings of classics by Chez Damier and Rhythm & Sound, the set provides insight into the creative mind of one of electronic music's master technicians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seminal Cuts From Detroit's Prodigal Son, 30 Mar 2008
Carl Craig is a weird character in the somewhat straightly compartimented world of electronic music; over the last twenty years or so, he's worked his way under various aliases through straightforward dancefloor sound (Paperclip People), abstract funkyness (69), modern jazz (Innerzone Orchestra, The Detroit Experiment), voodoo rhythms (Tres Demented) or lush intelligent techno (under his own name).

The last time he released a proper 'Carl Craig' full length effort seems to have happened ages ago ("More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art", back in 1997), as he spent more time in the last decade at DJing or remixing other people's work with growing success. This 'Sessions' double CD offering highlights some of the best moments of his career, and does so not only when focusing on those last works (reconstructions for Rhythm & Sound, Junior Boys, Faze Action or Chez Damier) or unveiling newer versions of the man's classics (the live treat to "At Les" or the revamped "Bug In The Bassbin"), but also raises the interest of purchase because featuring many of his own recent releases on his label Planet E, which is what makes this collection so rewarding: to name a few highlights, Tres Demented's "Brainfreeze", the awesome "Futurelovetheme" or "Sandstorms" are available here for the first time on CD, sadly in a mixed format. While it's far more relevant than his job on the recent Fabric Series volume he delivered (at least he doesn't scream over the mix here, and lets the music speak for itself), it would have suited those tracks better to be presented in their full length versions.

Anyway, it's an occasion to taste this great forward-thinking producer's wonderful skills, while hoping he'll finally concentrate enough on his own art to deliver us another proper full LP.

4.0 out of 5 stars definitive collection of Detroit genius, 15 Mar 2009
Two CDs that discovered the territory where Carl Craig built his huge career. It Contains some pearls, maybe the best is the Junior Boys's remix Like a Child.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 18 Dec 2008

(REAL NAME)
Im a huge fan of Carl Craig, his mixing and productions. However, I am very disappointed by this mix. All the tracks are excellent in their own right, but I feel this mix is very unimaginative, and uninspired. Best to buy the tracks individually unmixed if you want them bad enough, if you want an example of Carl's awesome programming and mixing skill then seek out "The Workout" mix.
