A Tremendous Return, 9 Feb 2008
Dolly Parton makes a very welcome return with her first mainstream country album in seventeen years, "Backwoods Barbie". As a big fan of hers, I had been anticipating the release of this album for ages and am glad to say that I am not disappointed at all.
The eleven tracks - nine of them written by Dolly herself - compliment Dolly's voice perfectly and as usual she evokes every emotion that each individual song requires.
The first song "Better Get to Livin'" is an inspiring song in which Dolly imparts advice about life and how you should let go and live without letting anything worry you. "Jesus & Gravity" is similarly spiritual and encourages the need to have faith in Jesus in spite of life's obstacles and hurdles.
The title track "Backwoods Barbie" - a title which Dolly applies to herself - expresses her wish to be taken seriously in spite of the way she looks and dresses. "Made of Stone", a heartbreaking ballad about a woman in a relationship with a married man shows Dolly's vulnerable side; as does "Cologne", a short, simple yet still very effective song about another tragic love triangle.
The sassy "Shinola" has Dolly taking out her anger and frustration against her selfish and conceited man, opting to leave him for someone else.
Dolly's voice is as strong and as beautiful as it ever was and this is a wonderful album. The songs are strong, well written and extremely catchy with excellent beats and instrumentals. Dolly proves once again that not only is she the greatest female country singer of all time, but also one of the greatest of any genre of music.

She ain't no barbie is our dolly!, 29 Feb 2008
This is another great album from Dolly, it's amazing how, after 41 years of releasing albums, she can keep coming up with the goods - but she does. The word legendary doesn't even begin to signify or describe her status as a songwriter and performer, while most of her peers live on their past glories and accolades, Dolly still sounds as fresh and exciting as the day she stepped off the bus in Nashville in 1964 with a guitar in hand, a notebook of songs & a head full of dreams and a drive that was gonna take her to the dizzy heights of superstardom. This album shows why she is still there at the top!
She's written 9 of the songs here, all to her usual high standard and the three others are great including covers of The Tracks Of My Tears and a wonderful country-fied version of (she) Drives Me Crazy, potential hit here? Some of the others already sound in the vintage Dolly classic mode, especially the tracks Backwoods Barbie, Cologne, The Lonsomes, I Will Forever Hate Roses (pure country), and the super Better Get To livin'.
I think this is the nicest packaged CD of Dolly's career (LOL), obviously she got her start with vinyl (I have 80 of them) so it was difficult to squeeze Miss Dolly onto a tiny CD sleeve, they're a bit limited but they've got it right for this CD, the artwork and packaging is brilliant... so top marks for that!
But the music is what counts and it is simply great and Dolly's voice is as strong as ever.
See you on tour girl!

Possibly Her Best Yet!, 21 Feb 2008
For anyone who has a love of Dolly Parton's music, "Backwoods Barbie" is an essential purchase. Her new song, "Better Get To Living" is simply stunning as are all the over tracks featured particularly "Jesus and Gravity", this really is her first mainstream country album in years and a classic Dolly album that, in later years will surely be classed amongst her very best. PS --- Her cover of "She Drives Me Crazy" is simply awesome and one I feel should be released as the next single.
If you're a Dolly fan, better get buying!
