Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on the best-selling novel from Cecelia Ahern, P.S. I Love You is far more than the standard chick flick that it may first appear to be. Relocating the novel from Ireland to America, multiple Oscar-winner Hilary Swank stars as the young woman who has recently lost her husband. And yet amidst her grief, she discovers a series of letters that he’s written to help. These letters give her certain things she has to do, to help her move on with her life.

It’s not a completely clean adaptation of the book, and yet P.S. I Love You has more than enough in its tank to qualify as a good, quality bona fide weepy. Swank in particular is a terrific actress, and delivers another worthy performance here. Credit too to Gerard Butler (Phantom Of The Opera, 300) for his work as her late husband.

The film does have a few problems. It meanders a little, and its running time could use a little pruning. Yet nonetheless P.S. I Love You is a well made, engaging drama, and likely to be responsible for a fair bit of blubbing among its target audience by the time the credits roll. Worth a look. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

P.S. I Love You, based on the Cecilia Ahern novel of the same name, tells the story of a young widow who discovers that her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good if you've read the book first!, 25 July 2008
By Jo (U.K) - See all my reviews
I absolutely loved the book, so when I found out there was a film out I was really excited about seeing it. However, I was very disappointed after watching it, the book is so much better. For starters, while the book is set in Ireland, the film is set in New York - I don't think this added to the film in any way at all. I didn't feel that all of the cast were entirely believable, somehow they didn't seem to gel.
I do think that had I not read the book first, I would have enjoyed the film a lot more. Gerry Butler is extremely likeable, and there are some tear jerking scenes. It is by no means a bad film, but if you are hoping for it to be like the book, you will be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible, 20 Aug 2009
By S. HADAVI "sinead" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
The only thing this awful film has in common with the book is the title. The story was moved to new york why? Cecelia Ahern`s book was a briilliant account of a young widow`s grief, and how her dead husband had left aletter for her to read each month, and how this helped her to cope. No Dublin humour in this travesty of a movie . What was that appalling orish accent about? If you loved the book , do not watch this .

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good!, 28 Jan 2009
I had never heard of P.S I Love You ( the book or the film) until I stumbled across it on Sky Movies one night. Hving nothing else to watch I thought what the hell and decided to watch it and I am so glad that I did.
This set in the USA and Ireland is a typically girlie night film in film but it is also so much more than that. This film didnt make me cry but I could feel a pretty solid lump in my throat to say the least. Gerard Butler is amazing as the funny, sweet man whos lives was cut short and Hilary Swank is also pretty good as his grieving widow. Top it off with gorgeous scenery in Ireland and a bucketload of kooky side characters and you have a hit film. I would recommend this film to people who like films like A Walk To Remember and Never Been Kissed. If You like these you will love P.S I Love You I certainly did.
