A trio from Champaign Illinois Headlights are the latest band I've discovered to hurls themselves with unabashed abandon into full on jamboree pop territory . An exundation of fulsome instruments , overlapping harmonies and tunefulness ramped up to ten, Headlights believe in pop that is not so much on full beam but hot wired to the sun. This is for the most part a very good thing.

The music has elements of fifties girl pop, dream pop, classical pop, indie -pop , psychedelic pop and other sub-genres of pop that I,m probably not cognisant enough to notice. Lets just say it,s a pop album. The core trio of Tristan Wraight, Erin Fein who provides some truly sumptuous dreamy vocals, and Brett Sanderson are augmented by additional musicians who lavish violin, viola, trumpet, accordion, saw? and extra bass and guitars. Self produced , recorded and mixed to embellish the full in your face intensity and impact of the music Some Racing , Some Stopping in an album that will never fail to grab your attention while it is playing . It ai,nt subtle but it sure is effective.

This is especially the case when songs as wonderful as the multi-harmonic glory of "Towers" are playing. "Cherry Tulips" is the most flamboyant straight up pop moment on the album with skiffling percussion and lambent keyboards set to the multifarious harmonies. "Get Your Head Around It" has Wraight on vocal duty , his boyish tones interweaving round the burnished chords and rambunctious percussion. The grumbling bass and vivid handclaps of "Market Girl" - a slight song lyrically about life,s peccadillo,s -leads into "On April 12" which has the sort of all enveloping keyboards used by New Zealand pop greats The Chills.

An arpeggiated guitar line gives "School Boys" a slightly mournful start but the funky bass and Fiens erudite backing vocals give the song a more upbeat spine. The title track is the albums one moment of introspection with a gleaming pitter pattering keyboard arrangement ."So Much For The Afternoon" could be off a Julee Cruise album while "Catch Them All" is pure Madder Rose which is a good thing in my book.

Only the flimsy nebulous "January " stops the album being a 100% triumph but after nine tracks of slinky pop wonderment one can forgive them a last minute lapse. Some Racing Some Stopping is a little gem of an album and as I sit writing with the sun streaming through the window filtered by the lambent leaf foliage it sounds even better. It,s a bit of a cliché but this is a great summer album, but I,m willing to bet it brings a bit of warmth to the most frigid atmosphere. Headlights are so very nearly on full beam.
