Product Description

In 2013 the world endures a nuclear attack. With much of London devastated, MI5 set up field offices in the north of England. Six new officers join the MI5 and their mission is to search for the bombers, which could end up becoming more close to home than they realise.

Synopsis

David Wolstencroft's counter-terrorist spy drama SPOOKS is launched into the near future in the innovative new six-part drama SPOOKS: CODE 9. Set in the year 2013 following a devastating nuclear bomb attack on the capital, the show centres on the bright young recruits of MI5's new Field Office 19. After the city's evacuation, teams such as theirs have been set up all over the country to tackle any further threats to the nation's safety. With limited training and experience but with unflinching determination and a fierce patriotic spirit, the new recruits face danger at every turn.

Charlie (Liam Boyle), Rachel (Ruta Gedmintas), Jez (Heshima Thompson), Vik (Christopher Simpson), Rob (Andrew Knott) and Kylie (Georgia Moffett), all come from widely different backgrounds and possess a range of invaluable skills and talents. Hand-picked by their experienced Field Office Leader Hannah (Joanne Froggatt), they must come together and work as a team for the sake of Queen and country. Frenetically-paced, visually-striking and achingly-hip, SPOOKS: CODE 9 introduces you to a future devoid of rules and structure, where protecting your country has never been so much fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kudos should be ashamed of this turkey, 12 Aug 2008
By Guy Roberts (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Kudos productions has been probably the biggest success story in British broadcasting in recent years with "Spooks", "Hustle" and "Life on Mars" but their new "Spooks" spin-off "Spooks: Code 9" is a very different story.

The scenario of Britain after a nuclear attack on London was potentially very exciting and offered much scope for the kind of excellent writing and acting for which the original "Spooks" has become known. Unfortunately what we are given is is an embarrassing and deeply silly story of teenage spies that fails on almost every level. Bad writing, bad plot, bad directing, bad casting and bad performances.

All drama relies on the ability of the audience to suspend their disbelief and there was no way we could seriously be expected to accept that the nation's security was in the hands of a group who looked as if they should be concentrating on passing their A-levels rather than playing with guns. A spy-master who doesn't shave more than once a week? I don't think so. Frankly I half-expected these junior MI5 heroes to catch a baddy who would curse them Scooby-style - "I would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for you pesky kids".

"Spooks: Code 9" has little or nothing to do with the real "Spooks" and is just a way for Kudos to cash in on the franchise with this cheap, shallow and unconvincing tosh. Hopefully Kudos will realise that they are undermining their own reputation and both they and the BBC will quietly put this turkey out of its misery.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid like a nuclear bomb....., 11 Aug 2008
By Mr. Sean Harris "The H" (Newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
"Spooks", the highly acclaimed BBC spy drama, has long been valued for its gritty and raw intensity. Creative and tension thumping story lines delivered by a range of talented actors make "Spooks" an excellent show for anyone who enjoys political dramas or stories of spies.

Spooks Code 9, however, fails to follow in the shadows or footsteps of "Spooks" to such an extent that it is near impossible to see why it has even been published under the same branding. Set in the aftermath of a nuclear bomb in the not too distant future, the security services have been re calibrated. Viewers are told that since 'terrorists are getting younger... new and youthful spies are being recruited to fight the new threats'.

Thus, a new breed of uninteresting and slightly post-puberty spies are trying to learn the ropes of playing with gadgets and dealing with equally unimpressive terrorists. Sadly, the show seems to lack creative input in terms of story, and this is combined with a cast who seem inexperienced for a show of this genre.

"Spooks" season 7 will begin this autumn and hopefully the MI5 team will be back in full glory to deal with the new and rising threats of terrorists and even low budget poorly written dramas like Spooks Code:9.

Spooks Code:9 has only just begun and so may still gather some interest and momentum. In the meantime, however, it appears to be leaving a slight scar on the highly acclaimed "Spooks" franchise. My advice is to simply avoid this show like a nuclear bomb.

1.0 out of 5 stars [spooks] CODE 9? . . . [spooks] AGE 9, more like, 13 Aug 2008
As a fan of the original, I looked forward to this. Boy, was I disappointed! I think 20 minutes was enough suffering to endure and more than sufficient to conclude that it must surely have been destined for CBBC and wandered into BBC3 by mistake.
From the very start, it was totally implausible. The writing was crass, the acting banal and the "characters" non-existent. It gets 1 star because I can't give less.
If you are looking for more of the real Spooks, steer clear of this; Danny must be spinning in his grave. I suggest that the entire series should be chucked in the nearest deep-fat fryer.
