Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

I must be in the minority of people if other reviewers of this film are to be believed. Not only am I an original fan of the first trilogy, but I also love this follow up!! Most people say they dislike this one as it doesn't "feel" like an Indiana Jones film. Maybe they haven't seen any documentaries about the making, but that is what the film makers were going for. The original three were set in the 30's and based on old Saturday morning seriel matinee's. This one is set in the 50's, and the focus has changed to the B-Movie paranoia flicks of the time.
This film was never going to live up to 19 years of hype, but what is it that people most want from an Indian Jones film? Action? Humour? A good supernatural archeological artefact? This film then ticks all the boxes. Of course there are some silly scenes (the tarzan scene springs to mind) but there has to been things to please the younger viewers...much like Jar-Jar.
All in all, this is a very good film.

Definitely the weakest and most forgettable of the Indiana Jones films Crystal Skull will entertain, but at the same time not keep you distracted enough to be bothered by it's "little things".

Little things like, is it less graphically violent then the last films? Why do the sets look so fake? Why does Shia the Pouf keep playing with is unconvincing James-Dead-style hair? And why is Marion tamer than she was in Raiders? These "little things" that we should be distracted from by an energetic story line do nothing to hold everything together properly to keep our minds preoccupied.

Though the film starts off quite well everything seems to start to loose its momentum the further it goes until we come to the completely tosh ending. There's very little more I can say except that this film was a disappointment but though I can find some good plot elements bouncing around this messy film they are not given enough "energy" to make it work. Rent this film... then you may very well forget that it ever existed soon enough.

It looks like the Indiana Jones story has finally reached the end of the road with this rather tired adventure, mainly involving chasing around the "South American" jungle.

There is an interesting start, involving a near miss on a nuclear test range, with some nicely observed period touches, but once the film gets going the plot seems to struggle, with the frequent fights and chases proving to be no substitute for an involving plot.

And don't get too excited about the bonus disk. The content is far too lightweight to be of much interest.

After this latest outing for Dr Jones, it is very hard to see how this series can go on. On balance, it would have been much better if it had all ended on the comparatively high note of "The Last Crusade".

This ripping yarn was a beautifully woven fabric of 50's America, UFO myths & back-to-basics Indy Jones fun. Vintage Spielberg escapism & one of my favourite noughties fantasies.
