Product Description

In 1975, director Nicolas Philibert (Etre et Avoir) was a young assistant to film-maker René Allio. Together, they made 'Moi, Pierre Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma soeur et mon frère' ('I, Pierre Rivière, having cut the throat of my mother, my sister and my brother ) a little-seen film based on the disturbing true story of a peasant who murdered his family in 1835. All the main parts in 'I, Pierre Rivière' were played by non-professional actors from Normandy. Here, thirty years after the film's release, Philibert takes his camera back to the region to learn about the lives of its stars during the intervening years. Weaving through time - between 1975, the present time, and the nineteenth century - Philibert creates yet another captivating documentary.

Synopsis

In 1975, acclaimed French filmmaker Nicolas Philibert (ETRE ET AVOIR) worked as an assistant alongside Rene Allio as he made a film--MOI, PIERRE RIVIERE, AYANT EGORGE MA MERE, MA SOEUR ET MON FRERE—depicting the true story of a 19th Century peasant who murdered his family. Here Philibert goes back to Normandy—some 30 years later—to catch up with the non-professional cast, weaving between time to create a piece of work just as captivating as that made by his mentor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerising, 7 April 2008
As with Etre et Avoir, Philibert's snapshot of a rural community offers the viewer a profound insight into the complexity of human lives and situation. In Back to Normandy, Philibert's backdrop are the people who appeared as non-professional actors in a film made in 1975 by Allio which reconstructed an infamous crime carried out in 1835. The documentary delivers a colourful and mesmerising narrative formed by scenes from the orginal film, archive detail and interviews with cast members. The agricultural vista is richly portrayed, including sweeping shots of Normandy landscapes, uncompromising footage of animal slaughter, traditional cider making and rural protest. Although Philibert introduces the characters/actors in a conventional `Storyville-esque' manner (lingering camera shots accompanied by subtle moments of silent introspection) the personalities are treated with warmth and compassion and the viewer is left with a sense of the everyday played out against the once in a lifetime experience of being invited to participate in a film. For me this documentary was uplifting and poignant - presaging a passage of time that encompassed almost two hundred years of local history, personal reminisces and human drama. The last shot left me deeply moved.
