Product Description

John Harmon discovers that his inheritance is conditional upon his marrying Bella Wilfer, a girl he has never met. He must conceal his true identity to win her affections Broadcast on BBC in 1976. Directed by Peter Hammond (Inspector Morse). DVD extras include a Charles Dickens biography and bibliography

Synopsis

Based on the Charles Dickens novel, OUR MUTUAL FRIEND tells the story of two women who are worlds apart, yet united in their pursuit of happiness. Bella is forced into an arranged marriage with a complete stranger who stands to inherit her father's fortune. But rather than take the easy route, her betrothed decides to fake his own death in order to find out more about the woman he is to marry. When Lizzie--the poorer of the two women--discovers a body on the banks of the Thames, and her father is suspected of murder, she finds herself inextricably drawn into Bella's world of dinner parties and high society. As their lives intertwine, a complex story of money and love emerges...

4.0 out of 5 stars A better version of a classic, 2 May 2008
By Tony Philpott (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews

While not quite as "grand" as the 1997 remake it has the advantage of retaining some of Dickens more comical characters and leaving the comedy in the series along with the tragedy. The 1997 mini-series was dark and bleak with very few light moments, quite unlike the book and this earlier version. My only comment would be on the casting of John Mcenery to play John Rokesmith. The actor was far to old to play a 28 year old man and when he stands next to Jane Seymour as Bella he looks like her father.
lesley Dunlop also makes for a more realistic Lizzie than Keeley Hawes in the 97 version. She sounds like a child of the river rather than keeley Hawes who sounds like she has just left a finishing school

5.0 out of 5 stars Waiting for Region 1, 27 Mar 2009
By Dean S. Maclaughlin "dmacl25" (Boston MA USA) - See all my reviews

I remember seeing this production when it first came out on TV in the US. It is really the definitive version of Our Mutual Friend. More recent versions are nowhere as good!

I hope that the manufacturer will eventually release it for Region 1, so that the many American fans of this production will be able to see/buy/rent it.
