This fourth volume of the brilliant Ergo Proxy anime delivers another mixed bag of episodes. The first episode of the volume (episode thirteen) is the most action orientated of the four presented here, with Re-l's AutoReiv Iggy revealing he is suffering from the Cogito Virus and attempts to confront Vincent about his relationship with Re-l.

The next episode (episode fourteen) on the volume is probably one of my favourites of the series so far being brilliantly atmospheric and beautifully made. While resupplying at an abandoned dome, Re-l, Vincent and Pino things start to go strange and lead the three to wonder if they can trust each other. This is a great episode with a brilliantly tense build-up and some beautiful imagery inspired by Sir John Everett Millais painting `Ophelia'.

Episode fifteen on the other hand is something of a comic relief episode with Vincent taking part in a game show that has deadly results for the one who looses. This could have been a terrible episode but the show pulls it off well with some truly funny moments. The true purpose of this episode seems to be the info-dump of a large portion of the back-story of the world where the series is set but it is still greatly entertaining.

The final episode on this volume, episode sixteen, is appears to be another comic relief episode. With the trio becalmed in the middle of the wasteland the episode explores Re-l's mind as she tries to come to terms with the turn her life has take and her attempts to unravel the mysteries of her companions. Altogether Ergo Proxy remains fascinating if somewhat slow at times, mixing beautiful imagery, philosophy and action into a wholly entertain series.
