Like a bedroom Matthew Sweet, San Francisco singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Kelley Stoltz makes the kind of music he grew up loving, and the influence of the Beach Boys, Nick Drake, the Velvet Underground, and especially the Kinks is obvious throughout CIRCULAR SOUNDS. As with Sweet, Stoltz's attention to detail is astounding: the songs here, playedand recorded entirely by Stoltz, are as detailed and well put-together as the shots of a Wes Anderson film. That his best tracks--such as the waltzing "Mother Nature" and the slow-burning "Put My Troubles to Sleep"--could pass for mid-period Kinks outtakes speaks to Stoltz's production skills and sharp pop instinct. Stoltz is not a singular talent on the level of prime Ray Davies, yet CIRCULAR SOUNDS remains a well-crafted, enjoyable attempt at a classic sound.

It's a pleasure to be the first person to review this great album, although I cannot believe no one has done so already. Kelley Stoltz is one of those artists who seems to slip under the radar in the UK (not sure how well known he is in the States). Incredible really because his songs are fantastic. They evoke pleasant memories of your favourite Beach Boys and Beatles songs. All jaunty piano and lovely melodies. Some people just have a knack for writing catchy songs and although he isn't in the class of Wilson, Lennon and McCartney (yet?!) some of these songs wouldn't look out on place on those guys best albums. Having done some brief research it seems Stoltz constructs the albums at his home, playing most of the instruments himself before taking it to the studio for final touches. You wouldn't believe that when listening to this album, that would suggest this album would be sparse, but it is far from it. It's jam packed with different instruments and interesting sounds. Having listened to both this album and it's predecessor 'Below the Branches' I have failed to find a track which gets fast forwarded.

To get maximum enjoyment from this album, turn up the sun, find a nice spot outside, crack open a beer and lay back and chill out.
