I recall seeing the original of this starring Charles Grodin. With a great script by the brilliant Neil Simon, it was witty, intelligent and infinitely more subtle than this Farrelly Brothers update. I say `update' and not `remake' because apart from the initial premise it bears no resemblance to the Grodin movie and features the usual gross-out comedy that is the Farrelly Brothers trademark.

Ben Stiller plays, as always, Ben Stiller... a likeable everyman who finds events moving out of his control. It's just as well he's good at what he does! Another plus point is the performance of Ben's real-life father, Jerry, who plays his dad in the movie (talk about typecasting!) More famous for his over the top performances in 'Seinfeld' as George Costanza's (Jason Alexander) pop Frank, he's his usual unhinged self here. And very funny he is too.

It also has a cameo at the end by a certain incredibly gorgeous resident of Wisteria Lane (guess who!) that is worth waiting for.

Like `There's Something About Mary' it features an incredibly annoying band (mariachi as opposed to that led by Jonathan Richmond) that pops up regularly throughout the story. The film also has a good-ish soundtrack, enlivened by some great Bowie tunes, and it's worth staying right to the very end to catch the rather filthy scene halfway through the end credits - another staple Farrelly trick.

It's nowhere near as good as `There's Something About Mary' but it is always watchable and it induces a few good belly laughs along the way. But be advised that it contains some choice language (and a bit of nudity) so it's not for kids. But it is just about recommendable (is there such a word?) as long as you're not prudish and have preferably sunk a few cans of alcohol before and/or during its length (oo-er missus!)

It must be over 30 years since I first saw the original version of the heartbreak kid, with Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd. Despite wearing the video to nothing over the years, it still shines as one of the best films I have ever seen. Eddie Albert's "Mr Corcoran" has to be one of the most inspired characters of all time. I avoided watching the Stiller remake of this, as I had an awful feeling it would be an awful affair, lacking in any subtle style, and playing to today's crude, lowest common denominator, "template" comdey - and how right I was. I saw it on Sky Box office, and from the start it was clear that they took all the best bits from the original (the achingly uncomfortable drive to the hotel; Lila's sunburn; Lenny/Eddie's lies to Lila...) and turned them into crass, crude, artless schoolboy / toilet humour. They also threw out all the hidden subtlety which helped to make the original such a classic - Lennie's huge earrings in the car, and his continually changing napkin in the seafood scene - what a terrible disappointment, I wish I had never seen it.

Ben Stiller (Meet the parents) stars as Eddie, a sporting goods store owner who is single. He meets Lila and soon gets married. On their honeymoon, Eddie starts noticing faults in his wife, and that's not all he notices when Miranda appears...

This romantic comedy drama from director Bobby Farrelly (There's something about Mary) shows Stiller in his typical role as a loving romantic loser stereotype by being unable to confront his true feelings, acting silly and somewhat of a geek.

Not to criticize Stiller's performance because he does it very well along with the other cast. It's the storyline more than anything that lets the film down with hardly any real humour and the formation of the plot, following pretty much every other romantic cliché around.

The film focuses upon physical humour, such as appearances, crashes, clichés and stereotypes. Though there are a few humorous moments there isn't a consistency behind the plot and so the film fails to fulfil what could have been a more engaging and funny comedy.

It always seems to be in such a rush with not many scenes lasting a long time, jumping from one idea to the next.

Overall its an average romantic comedy, not worth watching.

Oh Dear, I had great hopes for this film and to be fair the first half an hour is quite an funny, if not original, Rom-com. Then it turns. The whole idea with the heartbreak kid is to make the wife seem like a horror and it does so in crude and horrible fashion through a series of graphic sex scenes more suited to a porn video than a Ben Stiller film. It's embarassing to watch and wholly unessecary as the film is alright without it. For this reason alone. Avoid at all Costs!!!!

There are much better Ben Stiller films, such as Stiller and the Farrely's earlier effort, the fantastic Something About Mary.*

There are much better holiday romances too for example the far superior recent Adam Sandler film Just Go With It.

Ben Stiller, Malin Akerman and Michelle Monaghan all act their leading roles as well as they can, and there is decent support from Danny McBride (you always know what you're going to get from the awesome Kenny Powers!), Carlos Mencia and even Ben's dad Jerry Stiller. There just aren't enough funny lines in the script.

[potential spoilers] Akerman is gorgeous but after Stiller hastily marries her she turns out to have quirks like liking to sing and having a history of bad debt. Oh, and her 'scientist' job is just as a volunteer. So Stiller falls in love again with the quirky girl he meets at the hotel while on his honeymoon (Monaghan). To be fair to Ben's character Eddie the multiple 'quirks' are pretty annoying to him, but then I guess it's not surprising that someone turns out to be a little different than you thought just six weeks after first meeting them!

You might really enjoy this if you're a die hard Stiller fan or have just suffered a break up similar to his character's, but otherwise it's my opinion that this is average at best and that you have many better options out there (such as the aforementioned Just Go With It or most of Stiller and McBride's earlier work).

(*out of interest, is it just me, or was Malin Akerman doing her best to be a Cameron Diaz clone in this film?)
