3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Try for a change of scenery......, 30 Jun 2009
By M. Scott "general Consumer" (Newcastle) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Firstly, clear your mind of all preconcieved ideas of an MMO, this is not World of Warcraft! Let's make that perfectly clear from the off. As successful as world of warcraft has been it is impossible to avoid comparisons to this when looking at other MMO's simply because WoW does it already and most likely does it better and as a lot of people will have already experienced WoW it does save a lot of time and effort if you use that as a starting point....but make no mistakes this isn't WoW and you should not go into this game expecting it to be!

The difference here is that City of Heroes/Villains doesn't try to make you replay the same tired old stereotypes, it emerses you in a brand new world with brand new characters with brand new ideas built on tried and tested foundations. What is the point in moving from a game you already play and understand and have learned to play simply to replace it with another game where you have to play as orcs and goblins and elves and dwarves? Why not just stick to the one you are already playing, right? Well now you get to go into the worlds that Marvel and DC have made oh so popular and make yourself into a superhero out to save humanity fromt he dangers of the world or an archvillain hellbent of wreaking destruction and chaos wherever you set foot.

You start out this game with a choice of what type of character you will be. And if like me you can't make you're mind up you will spend the first hours of the game sitting there at the character creation screen going through endless permutations until something catches your eye and you roll with it. My advice is to keep on this one and not go back and create multiple characters until you play your first one through to level 50 otherwise you'll never get anywhere. The options available to create your character are just insanely numerous and there are so many combinations, especially visual appearance, that it is easy to fall into a trap of havign too many choices.

Once you start the game you will be ran through an optional tutorial (do this as you will level up to lvl 2 while doing the tutorial meaning you will start off with an extra power in the main game). Then it is on to the main game where you will have quests and random encounters and group missions and epic story arcs to deal with as you level up, improve your existing powers through enhancements and choosing new powers. You will eventually be able t choose costume upgrades/changes (for a price) as well as the superpowers to either super-jump/fly/teleport or super speed.

This isn't as all encompasing and deep and complex as WoW though, so don't expect that. There are no changing your armour and thus your appearance every time something drops. Crafting is limited, but still fun and the end game content is not as fulfilling, but this is also a blessing as it stops grinding, powerlevelling and other such issues being a problem you ned to worry about. The journey is everything in this game so savour it as you level, not after!

The controls do seem a little clunky, and the whole game lacks a little edge to really set it apart from the likes of WoW and Guild-Wars, and the controls may take some getting used to (although a quick change of the keymaps and mouse invertion will put you back in the realm of being comfortable after your other MMO controls). It does require a bit more computing power than WoW despite in my opinion the graphics not being justified by this extra need, but it still comes in under the requirements for other MMO's such as Warhammer Online or LOTRO.

While this may not have the depth or fantasy appeal for the recent influx of Lord of the Rings fanboys that MMO's seem to be thriving on recently, it still is a very good game and well worth a try, but don't expect it to cause you sleepless nights and a week online just to pay for one item as WoW manages to force upon you. It seems to attract a much friendlier and helpful, more mature playing clientelle which certainly helps with newbies entering here for the first time. People will help, the atmosphere is courteous and it doesn't take long to get a feeling of really being a superhero.

Give it a go, it's a nice game and a good change of pace!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fancy a change...?, 28 Jun 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
After being a stalwart Guild Wars fan for over 4 years, I decided after a friends recommendation (and trial key) that this game is a refreshing change to the l33tism found in many MMORPGs. I have been playing this for several weeks and have only skimmed on the surface but the game offers many routes to take and has a great community from what I've encountered - friendly and always willing to help. Definitely recommend this game to all
