Mr McDonald can sure sing, and this is another in his series of themed releases.

Any work of this sort is often hampered by the original, and this is the case this time: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Was it wise to attempt Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah given the power of the original? Steve Wonder's Living for the City should be left to Mr Wonder, and trying to do Van The Man's Into The Mystic is misguided at least.

It does contain two excellent songs that he had a hand in writing: Only God Can Help Me Now and Enemy Within (which is classic McDonald).

If you are a fan then you'll probably not be disappointed - he has a great "soul" voice. He writes great songs, so you sometimes wonder if he should focus back on his own material.

Michael McDonalds voice and delivery more than makes up for any weaknesses in this album. Every album that M McD produces has a hidden gem and Soul Speak is no different. This time is 'You don't know me'. Closest thing to perfection you'll hear.

Michael is on tour this year in the UK. To truly appreciate this album I strongly recommend that you hear it live. His live performances are better than his albums.

Added bonus is that you get to hear all your favourites from his long career including Doobie's.

i think of great soul records as being full of edge and excitement with record production that lifts the artist to heart bursting emotion.

here however michael mcdonald ,one of THE great blue-eyed soul singers, is given a soft bed to lay on and he's almost suffocated by the feathers.

soft guitars,soft drums,soft focus everything.even with the great songs he has chosen to cover they rarely raise the temperature beyond mundane and cozy.

i wish he'd released an accompanying CD with just him at the piano pouring all that unadulterated emotion his beautiful voice undoubtedly has into these songs.

it's a snooze-a-thon folks.
