Synopsis

Though Oban Star Racers is a multi-episode animated series, thanks to the strong storyline it feels more like a film when you're watching it - a nine hour rollercoaster of a film. The story revolves around Molly who from the outset is trying to win her father back (who she hasn't seen for ten years after he dumped her in a boarding school) and to have a family again. As the story progresses she becomes the Earth team's pilot in the Great Race of Oban so she has to simultaneously deal with conflict against the other competitors and her father.

The animation is a mix of traditional (characters, backgrounds etc) and 3D (the racers etc) and is visually stunning. Often you can't tell if something is traditionally painted or 3D unless it moves (it's obvious they had a big budget when watching this). The races themselves are both exciting and hectic and are integral parts of the storyline. They're not tacked-on episodes within the plot. The story is an emotional rollercoaster, going from touching or very sad moments to incredibly intense heart-in-mouth moments.

Overall I'd say Oban Star Racers is a ground-breaking, top-quality, very well written series that blurs the dividing line between series and film.

Oban Star Racers can be critised by the hardcore anime fanbase for not being of pure blood; produced by both French company Sav! The World Productions and Japanese animation studio Hal Film Maker it produces an intersting blend of anime qualities combined with a more Western maturity to it, and it's all the better for it.

The series revolves around main character Eva who after effectivly becoming ophaned by her father as a child, sneaks into her fathers racing corporation under the alias Molly (due to her ignorant father literally not regonising her). She quickly becomes wrapped up an intergaltic race between various beings of the galaxy who all seek the ulitmate prize offered by the malevonent being the Avatar.

The Earth team must race its alien rivals to obtain this prize. This is where Oban Star Racers first strength comes into play; its wealth of well defined characters. From the Earth teams gunner Jordon who holds a rooted hatred for the alien race the Krogs, Prince Aikka the alien love interest of Eva who holds conflicting thoughts on his races alience to the Krogs and of course Eva who longs to obtain the ultimate prize in hopes of bringing her family back. There are many characters with there own desires and goals all of which are incredibly well designed: no shonen stereotypes here!

The design team have designed the show so that characters and the majority of backgrounds are 2D drawings while the racing craft and other areas are 3D models. This was well chosen as it gives the characters the fluint movement and details they need while the vechiles feel weighted, though amazingly still containing decent detail levels which breaths life into them.

A large bulk of the show is dedicated to the races so this is the area where a lot of flair and high animation standards are shown. The competitors ships whiz along in high octane races while characters interact with each other which allows for better character interaction, particually after a dramatic off race moment.

If I was to compare this to any anime it would be Cowboy Bebop. Despite their story contations, the Western injection is the same, removing the worst anime stereotypes including poor slapstick humour and repeated animations. This surely speaks volumes for this shows quality! Great characters, intense races and a tearful ending makes this a must and thats before mentioning the surperb soundrack.
