Synopsis
America's quest to put a man on the moon, while both fascinating and inspiring, has been well covered on film, perhaps most notably in FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON and APOLLO 13. Add to that a space program that by the early 2000s ranked near Abscam in terms of public interest, and it's easy to see why the documentary IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON might be a tough sell. Yet this simple, stylish look at the Apollo space program is a quietly powerful rumination on the nature of patriotism, heroism, and humanity.
Director David Sington utilises a narrator-less structure that intercuts stunning stock footage with insightful commentary from the surviving astronauts who walked on the moon. There are no experts, no voiceovers, and no recreations. It's a style that works quite well, recalling the work of Errol Morris. While the space shots and the behind-the-scenes footage of NASA operations are fascinating, the astronauts--Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, and Alan Bean, among them--are a revelation. Variously witty, heartfelt, modest, and humbled when discussing their journeys into space, it's easy to understand why these men were heroes to a generation. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this film is the way in which the viewer is reminded of how genuinely stunning the Apollo mission was for not only the United States, but the world. One need not be reminded that 1969 was a tumultuous year for Earth, and Neil Armstrong's famous one small step for man literally united the planet, giving true credence to the latter half of his famous statement. The movie posits that for one fleeting moment the world was together and at peace. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON expertly recreates that moment, without a shred of excess patriotism, pretence, or sentiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4:3 can be remasted in high definition too! , 26 Jun 2008
By DocSmithers (los altos, ca USA) - See all my reviews
The interviews are done in 16x9, but the original film elements from the '60s and '70s are 4:3 as they should be. It amazes me that people think that this is somehow defeating the purpose of HD. Thankfully they present the archival film clips exactly as they were filmed, not cropped or stretched. Older film using the 4:3 aspect ratio can just as easily be remastered in high definition as widescreen films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the movie. I recommend the book too., 25 Jan 2008
I found this movie quite fascinating. Then curled up with the book of the same name by Colin Burgess and learned even more about these amazing stories. Highly recommend the movie for the inspiration and putting faces to the names, and the book for the deeper stories, entertaining, witty and insightful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational endeavor but no real HD thrills...., 29 Mar 2008
By Hazed "." (UK) - See all my reviews

If you want to enjoy just over 1 and a half hours of sheer engrossing history and great human acheivement then this is certainly worth watching. The interviews with several key members of the Apollo program are truelly awe inspiring. You will find yourself asking just how they managed to do what they did as the stunning movies of the titanic saturn V rocket launch, the un-nerving lunar landing and terrifying re-entry into Earths atmosphere are played out in front of you.
In HD it does look stunning, especially on my LG 42" LCDTV during the Launch. The sheer power of the Saturn 5's rocket engines! great churning balls of beautiful orange flames followed by the slow acceleration of what seems an impossibly big machine through a shower of broken ice particles, its a perfect subject for the extra detail HD DVD affords!.

The bad news for me however was the way this film has been produced for HD-DVD, that is to say, the way the resolution or format seems to switch from widescreen full 1080 HD for the interviews to a 4:3 format during the historical film sections! I tried again and again to get my player to auto-stretch it or zoom in but to no avail, always the borders showed due to it resetting itself for the interviews at the correct 16:9 setting. The picture effectively had a black border to the left and right of the viewable area which kind of defeats the point of having HD some doesnt it??? I would have to say I think it does...but i learned to live with it.
I paid around £15 for this film so I dont feel too hard done by, (I would have, had I paid the original price though)it does have HD quality interviews(view auto stretches to full screen no probs) and then the original (kodak celuloid?)films of the launch, flight, landing, exploration and splashdown I assume have been converted to as near to the 1920x1080 format they could get without losing the edges of the picture(and thus losing what is in effect an histroical document? dunno!). I think I would have rather had the full screen and lost a touch off the top and bottom but hey, Im no producer/director. Also the quality of this older film doesnt seem too impressive considering, with blemishes and scratches showing up quite a bit too and so if your hope, when buying this, is to see famous historic film shots in a newer purer clarity, when before all you saw were grainy and fuzzy then you may be in for a disappointed.
After saying all this however, the subject matter and story and interviews are worth every penny to me. I may not have liked the weird 4:3 format but it didnt stop my jaw dropping when i saw the images and heard the story. Buy this if you wanted to be an astronaut or if you have kids and want to peak their interest, it cant fail to impress i dont think. It time we went back.........
