After starring in Broadway musicals such as 'Rent' and 'Wicked', American singer/songwriter Idina Menzel releases 'I Stand', her third studio album. Menzel drafted in such luminaries as Glen Ballard (who produced Alanis Morrissette's monster-selling 'Jagged Little Pill'), and appears as co-writer on all but one of the ten tracks on the album proper. Veeringfrom straight ahead rock to lighter, musical-influenced offerings, 'I Stand' is a varied and intriguing record from a technically excellent and experienced artiste.

As with other reviewers, I bought this album on the strength of her singing in 'Wicked' (and its fantastic soundtrack) and I was not disappointed. Some of the music on this album has that 'wicked sound' about it and the stand out tracks for me include 'Brave', 'Forever (both very powerful ballads) and 'Better To Have Loved' (an angry gutsy song). Overall I would rate this album very highly, I would have loved for the CD single version of 'Defying Gravity' to be included but no one's perfect!

The whole album really shows Idina's talent. I bought it solely because I love her in Wicked but she is so much more than one role! The emotions she manages to portray in all of her songs are really tear-provoking. There is a diversity of song-style; the upbeat and the slow ballad-esque. I would recommend this to all- even if somehow you managed not to like her in Wicked or Rent you will love her in this!
She is amazing!

Stand-out performances in Wicked & Rent have obviously given Idina Menzel a platform from which to launch a genuine recording career but successfully crossing over was always going to be difficult and this album unfortunately isn't going to help her make that leap.

This probably has more to do with the record-buying public and radio stations currently leaning toward anything but good old fashioned pop music which means that if you are going to get massive airplay & sales, you really have to put something strong out there. This album contains a solid selection of strong tracks but there's not a massive amount of difference between the style and quality of the best and worst tracks. Producer and co-writer Glen Ballard has to be one of the greatest talents in his field of the last 25 years but there's just too many tracks that sound like they were produced in the early 90's. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a good power-ballad but when an album consists of only this type of track - it's a problem.

Idina Menzel's voice sounds great, it's full of emotion and doesn't fail to impress and I could happily listen to most of the tracks on this album but in it's entireity it's just too repetitive. Glen Ballard's greatest song-writing achievement in my opinion is Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" but consider the collection of songs it sat amongst. Dance, rock, funk, ballads ... all mixed into one album. Ok, I guess it's unfair to compare Menzel to of music's greatest ever-talents at his peak but the point I'm trying to make is that if "I Stand" contained a couple of upbeat pop tunes and maybe even an attempt at rock, it could have been a great album and possibly catapulted a worthy entertainer to the heights she deserves.

Great talent, good but not great album.
