Now we’ve arrived at Saw 4, it’s fair to suggest that most will be familiar with the conventions of the franchise. The dastardly, and really quite sick, Jigsaw (played, as usual, by Tobin Bell) has once again been devising a series of testing, intricate traps to test his human subjects, and naturally when these go off, there’s a fair slice of the film’s budget set aside for the requisite blood and gore. If you weren’t already aware, Saw films are absolutely not for the squeamish.

The twist with Saw 4 is that it digs into the backstory of Jigsaw, although it’s fair to say that it soon becomes a platform to layer on some more deadly traps. Mixing in flashbacks and present day events, the formula is ultimately well worn and well obeyed. Surprises are in short supply, even if there is the odd jump from time to time.

There is a law of diminishing returns with Saw 4, however, and as the franchise matures the tricks because less impressive and the blood and guts quotient increases to compensate. Furthermore, director Darren Lynn Bousman occasionally goes overboard with his flash cuts, proving a distraction from the carefully constructed scenarios that were the trademark of the original.

Still, criticisms aside, Saw 4 is here to do a job, and it has little qualms about getting on with it. Firmly made in the ‘more of the same’ mould of sequels, it’s compact, grisly and absolutely not the last film in the series. 'SAW IV' begins where SAW III finishes - Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Now, upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm and Agent Perez, arrive in the terrified community to assist the veteran Detective Hoffman in sifting through Jigsaw's latest grisly remains and piecing together the puzzle. However, when SWAT Commander Rigg is abducted and thrust into a game, the last officer untouched by Jigsaw has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of demented traps and save an old friend or face the deadly consequences.

Sick, gory and horrible are understatements when describing this film. If you have seen any of the previous Saw films (and you should first if you're going to watch this) you will know that with each one the traps get more disturbing and more disgusting and this is definitely the case here. The opening scene (Jigsaw's autopsy) is literally stomach-turning and is probably the most realistic and graphic that I've ever seen in a film. The first trap you see is also very sick and it pretty much goes on like this throughout the whole hour and a half.

I recommend this to you if you've seen and enjoy the first 3 Saw films, as it does follow the story on quite well and also leaves the movie open for it's sequel at the end. If you can stomach it, give it a go as it is a decent horror flick, but just don't expect it to be a very plesant one.

More like Saw 3.5, as this film takes places simultaneously with the previous installment. If you ever wondered why no one came to help any of the characters in Saw 3 then Saw 4 will answer your questions. Sadly, the characters are still all very stupid, despite their supposed training, and do not think logically to get out of their situation.

SWAT commander Rigg is thrown into a new game by Jiggy in which he has to help some people and hurt others. As he runs all over the unamed city the FBI pick up the pieces of Jiggy's life and slowly begin to unravel his master plan.

It's a clever story, but, once more, it is undone by horrendous editing, an idiotic sound design, and cheap, filtered photography full of quick fixes in post production. I'm not kidding, there are scenes where you can tell that the film was shot too darkly and they've lightened an area of the picture to make it more visible, thus turning black actor Lyriq Bent's face a shade of stupid purple. It's no mystery why this film won no technical Oscars. It looks like an angry child's nightmare. This series would look great if shot like a late 70s/early 80s exploitation film (which it essentially is). The post-modern fakery does not suit it at all.

To it's credit, it does pack in a LOT into the 91-minute running time, but it comes at the expense of coherence. What happened to the scalped hooker? Who is the the blinded guy in the mausoleum? Why doesn't Art just barricade the door and save Donnie Wahlberg's long suffering detective? Not one of the victims in these movies have learned from their experiences. Jigsaw is not an effective teacher. Either that or he should concentrate on choosing better victims. Or better movies. Or at the very least a better crew.

The Blu-ray presents the fake-tography in all of it's 1.78:1 1080p crappiness with a DTS HD-MA soundtrack and a bunch of extras if you are a fan. I'm not, so I'll pass.

I used to be the type of person who thought 'the Saw films? Ugh, torture porn! What kind of sickos would actually want to watch this filth?' Of course, like so many others, I was judging the films before I'd even seen them. However, all that changed when I watched the original Saw at a friend's sleepover. I found it to be an excellent film which had a strong plot and an equally strong cast. It was not, as I had previously guessed, a story based around torture but the traps were expertly woven into the plot. Of course, this set me off to watch the rest of the series and I have not yet been disappointed. One of the truly great things about this franchise is that all of the films inter-link. As such, there is a real reward for fans of the films. Having said this, I would say to anyone reading this that you will most appreciate this film if you have previously seen Saws 1-3. If you haven't, it is an understatement to say you won't have a clue what's going on at some points! For me, Saw 4 is my favourie in the franchise. For one thing, it is the most stylishly shot film in the series - the whole thing looks darn good. This is especially true of the end of the film - it really is the most epic moment in any if the series. The twist is one of the absolute best as well. In conclusion, you really don't have to be a fan of horror to watch the Saw films. I'm not, and I have the whole collection. They are plot-driven, well-made and worthwile films. And in my opinion, Saw 4 is the best of the bunch!

Here we go again! It's round 4 of this very successful horror franchise which rejuvenated the horror genre with it's unique main character of "Jigsaw" - the bad good guy who punishes the immoral by subjecting them to make horrific choices to save their own lives... whatever choices they make, there will be blood!

Saw IV continues the story of "Jigsaw's" crusade of punishment against societies wrongdoers with characters old and new returning back into the fray once more. We are shown a little more back story on John "Jigsaw" Kramer and find out how he actually came to transform himself into the masterful torturer. Expect some surprises and the trademark plot twist, but the torture devices did lack the sadistic creativity of the previous two sequels, though they still produce gore and severed limbs aplenty.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with "Saw III" before seeing this one or you will be lost in the plot, especially towards the end. Fans of "Saw" and those who are not bored of the the films premise will find this very enjoyable and will most likely have seen this already, but if you haven't, I recommend you do! It may not be the strongest sequel but there's still fun to be had yet with these films.

This limited edition packaging is a must for Saw collectors. The spinning blade accompanied by the whizzing sound effect and "Jigsaw" quote will send chills down your spin! And the cool "Rebirth" comic adds more to the back story of John Kramer, even if it is slightly contradictory to what we are shown in Saw IV. Well worth the price!
