5.0 out of 5 stars Gackt-Gundam collaboration! ( Amuro Version ), 8 Mar 2008
By Taku (Bushey, UK) - See all my reviews
Dedicated to the legendary Japanese TV anime series
"Gundam" and its director Yoshiyuki Tomino, the album
consists of six new Gackt-Gundam songs and three original themes
(of the first TV series and 1981 films) given
fresh typical Gackt make-over which did not let down
neither old Gundam fans nor loyal fans of his music.

The title "0079-0088" indicates the year the show hit the box and
caused a sensation in Japan to 1988 the end of its nine-year space era...
( don't worry, you do not need to be a Gundam expert to enjoy this CD)

Being a huge Gundam fan, he once revealed he kept
all his favourite Gundam lines from the original series in his iPod,
1st generation pre-video iPod that is ...,
Gackt devoted four months EACH to all the songs in the album and
couldn't resist the temptation of releasing two additional
limited versions featuring Amuro Ray and Char Aznable respectively.
Thus the three versions under one title confusion.

If it is Char Aznable that you are after, look out for the reddish CD package.
If you find the idea of those two Gundam warriors speaking words of wisdom
at the beginning or in the middle of each songs rather irritating or
totally irrelevant go for the standard version( in dark grey ).

This is the nice young debutant Amuro version and each songs include
one or two Japanese lines spoken by original actor Toru Furuya with
an only exception being the third song which also features
charismatic Char (Shuichi Ikeda).

Hope you won't get lost in my dodgy translation of Amuro's words.
Those lines show the essence of each songs and I thought it might be
useful to understand what they mean.

1. Ai Senshi ( Sorrow, Warriors )

Original Gundam TV series theme song ( by Daisuke Inoue et al) given a
fresh typical Gackt Metal/J-Rock make-over.
This song is the reason why I bought the CD as it is not available @ iTunes shop.

"Why does somebody who has so much power as you do still fail to see the tears in their eyes?

2. Metamorphoze

The 2005 Gundam film theme by Gackt. If you love Redemption or Returner
this will definitely be your favourite. Catchy and nice.

"We have to grow up as well."

3. Kimi ga matte iru kara ( Because you are waiting )

A good example of Gackt's typical dramatic / emotional catchy
upbeat song which he does so well always. A sure hit.

"You have opened up your eyes at last Amuro Ray."
"Yeah, I wanted to wake up Char..."

4. Mind Forest

Another fine mixture of moderately metallic Japanesque rock and lovely clear vocals.

"Didn't know I still had these feelings left in me."

5. Suna no Jujika (A Cross in the Sand)

Instrumental by Shinji Tanimura from 1981 Gundam film.

"Of course I'm scared, but I still have to do that."

6.Dybbuk

To be brutally honest this mixture of rap, dreamy female chorus and
heavy metal sounds rather experimental and a little too complicated
for my liking. Very addictive though...

"There's a time to fight, when you need to protect something important."

7.Dears

Yet another good example of upbeat catchy between J-rock & J-pop Gackt hit.
Empowering lyrics and nice guitar detail.

"Stretch out your arm a little longer, see it's not that hard."
"You have somewhere you can go back to"

8.Love Letter

A good Gackt ballad that shows off his beautiful voice.

"Wonder if I've become any softer..."

9.Meguriai ( Encounters )

Original theme song of 1981 film by Daisuke Inoue (et al).
Emotional and powerful transformation.

"I understand now why fate brought them two together.
I think I know the meaning why we were brought together."
