3.0 out of 5 stars Faithful but less than magical, 21 Oct 2009
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The star-studded 1972 live-action musical version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland isn't quite the catastrophe it's widely remembered as, but it's a long way from being successful. Despite including Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee from Alice Through the Looking Glass it's a fairly faithful adaptation, but the whimsy, surrealism and charm is rarely there. The idea seems to be to create a British Wizard of Oz but at times it feels more like Tales of Beatrix Potter with less dancing and worse costumes. The songs are pretty unmemorable and lifeless affairs, with John Barry contributing a rather monothematic score that at times seems at odds with the visuals, while the choreography occasionally seems to have little to do with either the music or the scene itself. With his penchant for bizarre lyrics, Don Black would seem the ideal lyricist, but it's only when Lewis Carroll's original verse is set to music in the Mock Turtle's song that the numbers hit their target.

Fiona Fullerton makes a rather beautiful but not terribly likeable Alice while the rest of the cast is a mixture of the good (Michael Crawford as the White Rabbit, Robert Helpmann as the Mad Hatter, Peter Sellers as the March Hare, Ralph Richardson as the Caterpillar, Dudley Moore as the Dormouse, Peter Bull as the Duchess), the bad (Rodney Bewes as the Knave of Hearts) and the indifferent (Flora Robson as the Queen of Hearts, Michael Hordern as the Mock Turtle, Roy Kinnear as the Cheshire Cat, Davy Kaye as the Mouse) while Michael Jayston has little to do as Lewis Carroll in the framing sequence and Hywell Bennett even less, being relegated to rowing duties. Still, director William Sterling manages a couple of visually interesting moments in his only big-screen offering and it's not as crushingly disappointing as Paramount's all-star 1933 version, though for all its fidelity it's not half as enjoyably surreal as Disney's animated version - which also had far more memorable songs.

No extras but an acceptable though far from outstanding 2.35:1 widescreen transfer.

3.0 out of 5 stars MR Belverdear, 10 Oct 2009
Although made around 1972, what this film lacks in special effects, makes up with it's great performances by an all star cast of the 70's. Watch out for a young Dennis Waterman painting roses red.In this film there are some great cameos from Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore and Spike Milligan. The scenes when Fiona Fullerton shrink and Grow are priceless and ground breaking for the time. Special effects make-up was quite good too. This feature also has some eye catching visuals and a nice musical score.Would be nice to see this piece of archive restored to it's former glory.Shot in widescreen 2.35:1 ratio.Although the film effects look primitive compared to now, young kids will love it.Strictly for Alice in Wonderland fans and nostalgia addicts. Simply a piece of wonderment from a bigone era!

3.0 out of 5 stars movie
It is a classic tale, which I enjoy, but I think the 1999 version with Miranda
Richardson is better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
I thought this would be a great movie but it turned out to be very dated! Fiona Fullerton speaks in a very stilted and over-acted way and once the singing started I had to turn it... Read more
