I heard this band on 'The Freak Zone', and loved their session, so bought this. It's great stuff, from the soaring title track, to the ethereal Glow worm, and 'Moon is a pearl'. Seen all the referances, but i think this is much better than Espers for instance - much more genuine. Makes me feel like i stepped out of a dream after i hear it

I am a bit biased on this one as their boat is moored just down the road from me and I've met them a few times and they're lovely people.

But their first album, named after the boat two of the band live on in Cornwall, is a cracker.

From the opening drum rhythms of title track Rosemarie you can tell you're in for something pretty special. Tiffany and Lydia's angelic voices merge together on a tale of river life while some weird kazoo like instrument burbles away in the background.

Under the Trees gets funky with a lolloping bass courtesy of the band's multi-instrumentalist Jarvis and pagan chanting from the album's producer Michael Tyack, who has employed a wide range of unusual and Medieval wind instruments to give the album a unique sound.

Labyrinth is the sound of the harvest being bought in with a haunting flute refrain, while on the melancholic Oak and Ash you can almost smell the damp earth as the song washes over you.

Dance with the Sea brings too mind the American psychedelic folksters Espers and the band also cover The Sun is Coming Up by American folk band Lavender Diamond.

Obvious influences abound, Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Medieval madrigals, Jethro Tull even, but Thistletown have created something quite unique here and found their own voice.

You couldn't imagine this album being made anywhere else but Cornwall and for that we should all rejoice.

This is a lovely, lovely album. Very beautifully produced and a glorious addition to the wave of astonishing new folk that's emerging.
