5.0 out of 5 stars For those awaiting another Jayhawks album, 25 Feb 2008
Gary Louris is simply one of the finest songwriters around. Why The Jayhawks never became one of the biggest bands on the planet is anyone's guess. Perhaps their sound was a little too 'English pop' for US tastes and too 'Americana' for the UK. For me, it was a perfect blend that should have gone down well on both on sides of the Atlantic. Whatever, I give thanks that Louris soldiers on, producing work as brilliantly consistent as this. Vagabonds is more 'pop' than Rainy Day Music, less so than Smile, occupying the same territory as arguably The Jayhawks' finest album, Sound Of Lies. Every track is a gem but the brightest highlights are True Blue, Black Grass, D.C. Blues and the epic title track. This is the first truly great album of 2008 and essential for anyone that appreciates classic songwriting. Simply superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the jayhawks!, 2 Mar 2008
By J. Willis (London, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
On first listen to this i was disappointed that it wan't a jayhawks album or at least sound like one, but after a few plays it's for this reason that i love it. With Chris Robinson (the black crowes) producing, this album shares a similar feel to his New Earth Mud lp (which i also recommend). The overall feel of the album is laid back and warm but it's not without a few lively moments. True Blue, We'll Get By & Vagabonds are the stand out songs for me. The `laurel canyon family choir' add a bit of colour to the songs and are a nice touch. I found it to be a grower, so persevere with it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best voices out there, 26 Feb 2008
By Big Jim "Big Jim" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
One of the best songwriters as well, this will be filed under Americana but easily transcends this label, and in the process p!sses all over all those other "singer songwriters" currently in vogue.

A nice mix of slow burners and more up tempo songs, Louris' plaintive voice holds your attention throughout.

Magnificent!
