Product Description

It's a tooth-for-a-tooth in this vampire-revenge gorefest. When female reporter Sadie Blake (Lucy Lui) wakes up in a morgue to find that she's joined the ranks of the undead, she's more than a little miffed. Armed with a crossbow and fighting a serious thirst, she sets out determined to get even with the bloodsucking insomniacs who put her in this situation.

From Amazon.co.uk

Sadie Blake (Lucy Liu) dies and comes backs to life several times in Rise—Blood Hunter, which gives this revenge tale impetus to continue perhaps longer than it needs to. At over two hours long, this film, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on A Plane), is beautifully filmed and acted at times but drags due to the drawn out story of a LA Weekly reporter who seeks revenge on her murderer, the vampire head of an underground blood-sucking cult. This handsome monster, Bishop (James D'Arcy), charms women, kidnaps them, and slits their throats with his claw-shaped necklace, stumping the entire LAPD minus Clyde Rawline (Michael Chilkis), a hard-drinking policeman who eventually teams up with Blake to hunt and destroy the vampiric ringleader. The scenes depicting initial doses of violence, like when Blake wakes up in a metal casket at the morgue, or when she's originally killed in Bishop's bed, covered in black trash bags to avoid bloodstains, feature crisp film footage awash in blue and red, setting a semi-poetic mood. Mostly, Rise—Blood Hunter operates on the vampire tales' conflation of sex and death, taking a sexy tone throughout, especially when Sadie or her fellow vampire, Collette (Cameron Richardson), feast on blood then strip off their sullied clothing. Blake's vengeance underpins her rebellious attitude, as she shoots her crossbow at each person she meets on the trail to Bishop. Though Rise—Blood Hunter is not a classic in the genre, it is enticing to add Lucy Liu to the list of gorgeous vampire slayers. --Trinie Dalton

Having seen a lot of vampire films, I'm usually unimpressed by modern versions but this one is suprisingly good.

The story centers around a reporter out to hunt down and kill the vampires who turned her - how she became a vampire and why she wants revenge and death instead of imortality becomes apparent as the film progresses.

With plenty of action, blood and some sex this is an engaging film. Lucy Liu is a strong presence in the lead role.

The only downside is that some of the story is told in flashbacks and its not always immediately obvious which scenes are the present and which are the past. Until it becomes clear, the story is occasionally a bit confusing.

This film is definately worth seeing at least once. Fans of vampire films will probably enjoy it but as with any film, if you're not sure, rent it first!

RISE - BLOOD HUNTER DVD R2 2008

Back in the 1980s I replaced most of my collection of 8mm movies with VHS and I have been going through a same process of upgrading to DVD for the last two or three years. This has given me the excuse to revisit many films that I have not watched for some time and to sample new films of the genre which have appeared over the past 20 years.

I thought that this film was actually a very good, modern take on the vampire genre, the storyline was good, the acting better than normal for a modern horror movie, especially Lucy Liu, who brings her reluctant and vengeful character to life (after death) as she hunts down those that she sees as responsible for her becoming a vampire. The blood suckers are suitably nasty, not the effete prancing pretty boys of the television serials and the film cracks along at a fast pace for most of the time although there are a couple of short periods where the action seems to stall for a minute or two. This is one of those films where the viewer needs to pay attention as there are recall sequences which are not always clearly defined.

I had not even been aware of this film until I started looking to replace older VHS tapes with DVDs and came across it by chance. I am glad that I did, it is an enjoyable movie, and certainly much better than many contemporary vampire offerings.

Many will have watched or bought this Movie because of 'Lucy Liu' ........and why not ?
I must point out there are no 'martial' art scenes often associated with many of 'Lucy's' performances.
'Sadie Blake ('Lucy') is a reporter and is investigating a mysterious death.however, she is caught by those that she is investigating, she is turned into a 'Vampire' like being.
But she still has enough character to attempt to exact revenge for being turned into something she does not want to remain being.she sets out on
a vendetta, but has to get past and kill those that protect the 'Cult' leader before she can try to gain the revenge that she seeks.
This film has graphic 'blood' feasting and a fair share of other violent sequences.
The film does keep slipping forward and backward in time, the reason for which does however become clear.
It's not a bad film and is probably worth buying if you enjoy 'Vampire' type movies.

This Blu-ray is the 2 hours 2 min. Unrated Cut and 'all-region' (attn: Yanks and others). A Dolby track and two DTS tracks, one loseless master! Looks good, sounds good. I had the DVD and thought it was boring but here I am rebuying it in 1080p because it's a good boring; with style. Interesting cast and unusual production. Slow paced and moody vampire story gives genre a sexy underworld angle.

I get the distinct feeling that "Rise: Blood Hunter" was trying to be a different kind of vampire movie. The vampires don't have fangs (they use little knives to cut throats), they don't have superhuman strength, and the "V" word is never used.

So why, why, WHY did they choose to embrace the most cliched of vampire plots, namely "I Hate You, Vampire Dad"?

In its desperate rush to be different, "Rise: Blood Hunter" ends up being oddly familiar -- the story of a vampire-hunting vampire who wants to kill other vampires, especially the ones who made her a vampire. Think "Blade," but without the kinetic action scenes or the vampires who are actually scary. Lucy Liu and Michael Chiklis are the only bright spots here, giving performances too good for the movie they're in.

Sadie Blake (Liu) is an up-and-coming journalist who has been investigating an underground Goth party scene. But when one of her sources is found dead, she investigates a mysterious address that her tech nerd friend unearthed for her -- and finds a vampire cult who very much do not want her to expose them. Big shock: they rape and murder her, and several hours later, she reawakens in a morgue drawer as a vampire.

At first, Sadie is unable to control her lust for human blood, but is disgusted by herself. After wandering into a homeless shelter and killing an old man, she tries to kill herself. Instead, she is trained by a vampiric mentor in how to hunt other vampires with a teeny tiny crossbow.

So she goes on a little road trip, tracking down the members of the vampire cult, with their leader Bishop (James D'Arcy) as her main goal. But she runs into the grieving Detective Rawlins (Michael Chiklis), whose daughter was murdered by the cult.
