During 2004, Donnacha Costello released a series of ten vinyl singles, each titled after a different colour. Every release in the Colorseries was a variation on repetitive electronic music, but deployed a distinct set of sounds. Costello has now compiled his favourite tracks from the series, making for a wide-ranging and surprisingly coherent album.

Despite the arbitrary theme and track titles, the music here is emotionally intense, ranging from upbeat synth-pop (Orange A) to reverberating dance tunes (Grape B) and murky subterranean gurglings (Blue B). Towards the end of the album, Costello slows the pace right down with an introspective ambient turn on the two Cocoa tracks, before returning to sunnier climes with excellent closer Mustard B.

This is one of my favourite electronic music releases from 2007, even if much of the material was released several years earlier. For those interested in hearing more of the ambient/experimental side to Donnacha Costello's work I recommend his releases as Modul.
