Product Description

Product Description

Meet the Dwights. Jeannie (Brenda Blethyn) is a loving mother, cook, divorcee, and on the road to a comeback as a comedienne. Her ex-husband is staging a comeback of his own in country music. With eccentric wannabe parents like these and a disabled brother, it's not surprising to see that life hasn't always been easy for Tim, a shy boy, who's a disaster with women. When he meets the beautiful and feisty Jill, things seem to be looking up for him. There is only one thing standing in his path to happiness... his mother!

Brenda Blethyn is always a star performer and some of her one liners as a comedienne on stage are hilarious. It's an Australian themed film about her living with her two sons and not being able to let go of them whilst being on the comedy circuit and doing a stint as a daytime dinner lady. Her eldest son has learning difficulties and the other one falls in love which she finds unbearable. Bit of a chick flick really and reminded me a bit of Little Voice.

This Australian film is very effective of its kind and thoroughly enjoyable. Blethyn plays a single mum with two sons, one brain-damaged from birth, who juggles two careers, in a diner and (in the evening) as a stand-up comedienne who peddles a kind of old-fashioned broad humour. Things become complicated when one son, Tim, gets involved with a girl, Jill ; Blethyn cannot let go, and her extreme reaction endangers the relationships. All ends well, but it is not an easy passage. There is a good deal of humour in the earlier part of the film, and throughout it is pacy and does not hang about. All of the performances are very good indeed ; Blethyn's bravura effort is a tour de force. In the end, all are reconciled, and it is not difficult to feel the eyes moistening as you watch the two generations come to terms with each other and reach reconciliation. The finale itself is terrific. So, a thoroughly well-made and enjoyable film.

Not quite a five star but very enjoyable as a study of a dysfunctional family. Good acting throughout and very true to life. As in life nobody in this film comes out of it as perfect but everyone comes out of it as doing their best despite their individual quirks and flaws.
