Amazon.co.uk Review

Superbad, for many, was the surprise hit of the year. Yet when you consider the comedy pedigree sitting behind the camera, perhaps it’s not that much of a turn up. Director Greg Mottola, for instance, cut his teeth on episodes of Arrested Development and the underrated US show Undeclared. Co-writer Evan Goldberg has credits on the US Ali G show, while his partner in scribe is Seth Rogen, star of 2007’s other breakout comedy, Knocked Up. And with that film’s director, Judd Apatow, also on the production team, it’s understandable to see where Superbad gets its quality from.

Yet in spite of all of these names behind the camera, Superbad is powered by Jonah Hill, previously seen in mainly supporting roles, as the foul-mothed Seth. In conjunction with Michael Cera’s Evan, he bursts his way through a film that sees the pair of them trying to buy booze to go to a girl-filled party, before they go their separate ways to college.

Hill and Cera are strong in their lead roles, and keep Superbad motoring even through its quieter moments. But the scene stealer has to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, or--courtesy of his fake ID--McLovin. When he encounters two cops, played by Rogen and Bill Hader, comedy gold swiftly ensues.

Superbad isn’t as consistently funny as Knocked Up, and its running time may outstay its welcome a little, but it’s still a tough film to knock. It’s simple and straightforward aim, to sit on your screen and generate plenty of laughs, is comfortably achieved, and its rewatch value is high as well. Well worth a look. --Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars McLovin it, 1 Mar 2008

This is not Schindler's list so don't expect anything with a good story , this is just the story of 3 teenagers trying to buy alcohol in order to be popular with girls and maybe get laid.

What follows is a something in between American Pie and South Park , the main character ,Seth , is inspired in Cartman ( fast foul mouth ) and he is both funny and annoying.

The secondary characters are also very funny and Michael Cera provides a bit of romance in the movie. The 2 cops are the most surreal part of the movie to the point of nearly ruining it.

This is an overall 4/5 movie entertaining and funny and full of rude jokes.

The Extras are almost useless , the outtakes are not as amusing as the real movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Teen Comedy, 1 Jul 2009

For three quid, I don't think anyone can argue about not being satisfied with this film.

'Superbad' isn't a trivial piece of work with a sophisticated plot; it's just an enjoyable romp that segues together many of the issues teens face growing up, albeit in a very humorous and outlandish way (which is the whole point). Perhaps what might have distressed the negative reviewers is that they couldn't relate to actions on screen, or they don't like the style humor. These are of course perfectly acceptable reasons, however to suggest things like this is the 'worst film ever' is perhaps going a bit far.

The film centers around three young guys who are just about to graduate from School, but want to finish things on a high. With rumors circulating about various parties, it's loud-mouth Seth's goal to get as drunk as possible so that he can sleep with a girl he's liked for years. While each of the lads have their own love interests, the development of the film circulates around them trying to get some booze and taking it to the party.

After one of them gets a fake I.D (hilariously re-naming him 'McLovin', aged 21), they think they've hit big time only to eventually split up when the Police arrive... And so the remainder of the film follows their personal quests, leading up the party at the end, and the aftermath.

While not a ground-breaking triumph in terms of story, the themes that pop in and out of the film are well picked up on, such as the cost of getting drunk, teen crushes, and plenty more. Perhaps the best scenes when they eventually each had their own chance to 'hit' on the girls, and the emotional responses that entail their first times... So it's credit to the three guys for pulling off such dorky roles!

It's immature, crude, and sometimes graphic, but it's certainly worth a shot if you want some cheap laughs!

4.0 out of 5 stars a film review, 30 Nov 2007

This is one of the best comedies of the year. Its hard to review without giving too much away but interestingly it takes the concept of a buddy nerd teenagers flick and rather than having all three in every scene together all the time, it lets each individual follow thier own path. Up there with N.Dynamite. It is refershing to go to the cinema and split yourself in two with laughter!
