Amazon.co.uk Review

If you don’t care too much for Adam Sandler’s comedies, then I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is absolutely not the film to convert you. But if you are one of the many who continually enjoys his films, then his latest is well worth checking out.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry sees Sandler as Chuck and Kevin James as Larry, a pair of firefighters who become domestic partners to help protect the latter’s children. It perhaps goes without saying that this is a reluctant union, and Sandler’s character goes to great lengths to demonstrate the fact that he’s heterosexual. Yet if you can tolerate the cheapness of much of the material, it’s hard not to find yourself chuckling at it.

The film boasts a supporting cast including the likes of Jessica Biel (as a conveniently attractive lawyer), Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi, and does manage to consistently serve up the laughs. It also finds room to squeeze in Dan Aykroyd and Rob Schneider as well.

And while there’s nothing particularly clever about I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, it very much does what it offers on the proverbial tin. It’s Sandler, in a fish out of water situation, reacting against it. Switch your brain and sensitivities off, and you may well have a ball with it. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

Katherine Heigl (GREY'S ANATOMY) and Seth Rogan star in this hilarious and touching comedy as two mismatched people brought together by a one-night-stand that results in an accidental pregnancy. Using many of the same actors from his previous film, THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN, and his cult television series' UNDECLARED and FREAKS AND GEEKS, director Judd Apatow once again finds fresh humour in relationships and sex. Young, bright, and talented, Alison (Heigl) has everything going for her. After being promoted to an on-camera role at E! Television, Alison goes out to celebrate with her older sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann). Not long into the evening Debbie is called home to her kids, leaving Alison in the eager company of charming slacker Ben (Rogen). In the dark of the nightclub and in the ensuing drunk hours, Ben seems like a great guy. But in the sober light of day, Alison quickly discovers the man in her bed is nothing more than an overgrown child with no job, no money, and the social habits of a teenager. Brushing him off politely as a one-time affair, Alison goes on with her life, until two months later she realises that the unthinkable has happened. Apatow establishes the differences between his protagonists early in the film, bringing their contrasting worlds to life with stellar performances by secondary characters. Paul Rudd has never been better in his role as Alison's bitter brother-in-law, whose somewhat dysfunctional marriage to Alison's feisty but insecure sister unfolds in parallel to Alison and Ben's story. Meanwhile, Ben's home resembles a frat house, and his friends (Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, and Martin Starr), while hilarious, are hardly role models. KNOCKED UP will have audiences cracking up from start to finish, and it also deals with some serious issues about commitment, life choices, and becoming an adult. The film asks universal questions in a sweet and touching way, achieving a sad humour that distinguishes it from other films of its genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Firefighting fun, 19 Aug 2009
By TheGerbilTamer (London) - See all my reviews

This film's plot centres around two Brooklyn-based firefighters named Chuck and Larry played by Adam Sandler and Kevin James respectively. Widower Chuck saves Larry's life in a fire and to repay him the former asks the latter to pretend to be his significant other to secure state pension rights, the only problem is that the local authority becomes suspicious of their seemingly suspect civil partnership and seeks to bust the scam.

I guess it depends on whether you're a fan of Adam Sandler or not which will determine your enjoyment of the film, personally I've always found him very samey as an actor/performer. All of the prejudices concerning same sex relationships are dragged out in this film, although to be fair it does treat the subject with some level of respect. The supporting characters which include Jessica Biel's lawyer and Ving Rhames' fellow firefighter add interest to the plot and stars such as Dan Ackroyd also make an appearance. I did chuckle at various scenes and it's a fairly undemanding watch, but it's no classic in the making.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chuck & Larry, Very Funny Film, 19 Mar 2008
By Paul John Manning "MovieMan" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Forget all the deep social stuff, the current mores, the political correctness and attempts to psychoanalyse deep messages etc, just enjoy it for what it is which is an hours entertainment. Myself and my wife have different sense of humours and laugh at different things, with this film we both laughed together, good deep belly laughs, it was very funny and well worth the money.
