Description

John Tams is among the most celebrated of folk artists recording and performing today. Musician, actor, musical director, in his long career he has recorded three solo albums, two of which won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Album of the Year: Unity in 2001 and The Reckoning in 2006 - a feat that no one else has achieved! However, he is probably most famous for his acting part as Rifleman Daniel Hagman in the long running TV series 'Sharpe', for which he also provided the music.

John Tams: The Definitive Collection contains over an hour of music and features songs from his three solo albums along with three tracks from his earlier band The Home Service and two from other projects. It includes his two award winning classics "Bitter Withy" and "Harry Stone (Hearts Of Coal)" as well as a re-visit to the music of Sharpe with "Spanish Bride". The perfect introduction to the music of John Tams at a budget price.

I was lucky enough to see John Tams perform at 'The Moseley Folk Festival', in Birmingham, this summer. Until then, though, I only had vague memories of his appearances in 'Sharpe'. However, after hearing him at Moseley, I realised how woefully inadequate my c.d. collection was and after purchasing 'The Definitive Collection', to get an idea of just what I'd been missing out on all these years, went on to buy all his other albums i.e. 'Unity', 'Home' and 'The Reckoning'. He has a well developed ear for melody and it shows in all of his beautifully crafted compositions. I recommend this album as you won't be disappointed.

First came to my attention through the Sharpe series and he just gets better and better. Recently saw him live and the man and his music are well worth a listen. This collection of many of the songs he is well known for plus a few he is less well known for is well worth the money.

A 'snapshot', or 'soundbite' of so much brilliant work over many years. Those who have only come to Tamsy as a result of Sharpe should not overlook the years of earlier work with The National Theatre on the original and musically evocative Lark Rise to Candleford plays (not the 2008/9 TV series), early days with the ever evolving and organic Albion Band, the memorable recordings with the band Home Service, and, more recently, the BBC Radio Ballads series. Always worth travelling the extra mile to see live.
