Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
It’s right there; on the cover, the spine, or illuminating from your iPod screen. But it’s hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele’s debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it’s true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love’s highs and (mostly) lows and there’s a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poise—really reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can’t help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it’s jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that’s not an alignment that’s ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you’re in possession of something special. Who dares to dream what bigger numbers could bring. --James Berry

CD Description
'19' is the debut album by London songstress Adele. In a vocal and style reminiscent of Amy Winehouse, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald this is an album that easily justifies the comparisons. Smoky, lingering vocals lament tales of lost loveand heartbreak whilst retaining a positive charm. Features the singles 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Hometown Glory'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Voice but patchy material, 16 Mar 2008
By Dr. J. D. Mitchell "Jon Mitchell" (Plymouth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is no doubting that this girl has a great soaring voice and has joined the growing ranks of "finds" in the charts. And on tracks such as "Hometown Glory" and "Daydreamer", she shines. Beautiful soulful songs that make you reach for the replay button. But you get the impression that some shady character is wanting their cut a little soon. There just isn't enough quality music for a whole album. Some tracks are clumsily put together and do nothing for Adele's undeniable talent.

She has shown her class with great performances on TV shows like Later and at such a tender age she could be a real star for the future. But this album does less for her charms and musical style than it does to line record executives pockets. Download "Pavements", "Hometown" & "Daydreamer" but save the rest of your money for her "difficult second album".

4.0 out of 5 stars An ecclectic mix by a versatile artist, 11 Dec 2008
I wasn't convinced i'd like this album after hearing the very commercial Chasing Pavements but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the tracks. Adele is a genuinely versatile artist slipping effortlessly between songs you might attribute to Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen or Beyonce Knowles if you didn't know any better. She has a very smooth tone and a mature writing style which makes this a joy to listen to from start to finish. Worst Track: the rather safe version Chasing Pavements lacks the soul of other tracks. Best Track: Tired, perfect in every way. Overall well worth the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great voice but one for the future, 17 Feb 2008
I'm sorry but although her singing voice is truley amazing, there just aren't enough decent tracks on this album to warrant the 5 stars being dished out here.
I'm glad I borrowed, before buying it. Hopeful for the future though.
