Inspired by I Fagiolini's breathtaking live show, this film brings to life Monteverdi's madrigals of love and loss. It begins in a restaurant, where the buzz of conversation is soon pierced by a woman's anguished cry as her partner says he wants to break up. Gradually we realise that the same story is being played out at different tables. Flashbacks show how the couples all arrived separately at this crisis. The music expresses their conflicting emotions with an overwhelming intensity, and the singing and sound quality are superb.

John La Bouchardiere's The Full Monteverdi is a film set to Monteverdi's Fourth Book of Madrigals (the soundtrack consists of just voices singing Monteverdi's music - there is no spoken dialogue).

We are introduced to six couples eating in a contemporary restaurant, each of whose relationships is in crisis, and follow the progress of each couple as the action moves outwards from the restaurant to their various homes and other locations. The performing of these very beautiful madrigals is simply superb, and so it should be - the film grew out of La Bouchardiere's live show that was performed for many months with the same cast (I saw it at the Brighton Early Music Festival), before he transformed it into a film. I particularly liked the lighting in the restaurant at the beginning, with figures in shadow against light backgrounds one minute, then strongly side-lit against a dark background the next.

I have owned three copies of this film but keep giving them away as presents, so I need to buy a fourth! Oh, and don't worry (as I did initially) that the film is marked "NTSC" - it plays perfectly everywhere.
