Product Description

While attempting to reach his daughter Nicki (Madeleine Hinde), who is screaming on a merry-go-round, Richard (David Lodge) is crushed to death. Seven years later, Nicki still bears the scars of her father's death and blames herself for it. When Nicki's mother (Renee Asherson) gets into an affair with Harry (Patrick Mower), who is only after her for her money, Nicki gets into a horrific argument with him and, in the struggle, stabs him. Nicki is sent to a remand home where she is persecuted by the other inmates. Eventually, she manages to escape and heads to Oxford to stay with her boyfriend Peter (Dennis Waterman). She soon learns that even he cannot be trusted. Nicki realises that she must turn and face up to her past. Even then, tragedy is close to hand.

"School for unclaimed girls" is the American title for Robert Hartford Davis' film "The Smashing Bird I Used To Know".

Who is Robert H. Davis? The sleazy director behind films like "The Yellow Teddy Bears", "Corruption", "Incense for the Damned" & "The Fiend"...all unsung British exploitation films.

A dvd release of this film is long overdue, but why the American print? This is a British film, instead of getting the British release with the original title, the dvd bears the US title.

This bare bones release has the US trailer & a few stills...that's it.

Maureen Lipman appeared on "Room 101" & wanted this film put there. Unfair Maureen, because you give an excellent performance & the film really is not that bad. Hartford Davis was one of the few Brits making films in the 70's, his lurid & potent efforts are distinct from Hammer, Amicus or Tigon product & are ripe for rediscovery. Of course they never will be "rediscovered" because Hartford Davis is long dead & his films are deemed too obscure for dvd boxsets.

Robert Hartford Davis made distinctive films, this is one of them.
